F. van Balen (19th/20th century) - still life of assorted flowers in a glass vase, the flowers consisting of tulips, roses, carnations and other blooms with butterflies in flight nearby, signed, oil on canvas, 30" x 23.25" *Provenance, with Phillips Auctioneers of Leeds, 3rd December 1997, their sale of 'Yorkshire and Victorian paintings', Lot 165, page 28, illustrated in colour, the price realised was £1400. *There are strong stylistic comparisons to be made to the work of Frederik Victor Bailey (1919-1997). See lots 1204 and 1205 in Tennants spring sale, 30th March 2007, page 241, a still life of flowers consisting of roses, tulips, convolvolus, iris and other flowers with a dragonfly, snail, caterpillars and a butterfly nearby which realised £2800 and a further still life of flowers in a vase consisting of roses,tulips, convolvolus and other blooms with raspberries and blackcurrants nearby which realised £1200. Both pictures are illustrated in colour on page 241 of that catalogue
Frederick Charles Thomas Bagust (1901-1985) - portrait of a black woman, wearing an orange dress, blue apron and white necklace with a green ribbon decorating her hair, flowers in a vase nearby, oil on canvas, 24" x 20" *There is a further study of two girls on the reverse of the picture, inscribed with the artist's name and his dates on the stretcher verso, possibly by a later hand
