Lot 65

Olotine double bed, XVIII century.Carved and polychrome wood. The bed is complete. The painting needs to be restored. Wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.Measurements: 152 x 156 cm (headboard). The Olot bed is a typical type of Catalan furniture from the second quarter of the 18th century. The bed in question, consisting of a complete upright structure and headboard, is a clear representative of this typology. The headboard is beautifully polychromed, depicting a vase framed in a border, surrounded by borders in geometric shapes and borders of flowers in gilt and bright colours to enhance the scene. In Spain in the 18th century, the European type of bed was adopted. New production centres appeared, the main ones being located in Olot, Vic, Valencia and Mallorca. They are known today as Olot beds and are characterised by their large headboards, generally more or less pyramidal in shape, which were stuccoed and painted. Those from the first half of the century are simple, and later the cabriole leg appeared, extending upwards to form half-height posts, also in cabriole. The headboard of these beds usually stood alone, and was fixed directly to the wall. It was made of soft woods such as white or black poplar and birch. In the early days they were polychromed in a single colour or marbled, and the profiles were gilded; in the second quarter of the 18th century, religious images appeared, set in a reserve of wavy contours. In the last quarter of the century, the legs and posts were turned and the decorative motifs depicted on the headpieces became courtly, and the profiles became lighter with rococo motifs.

Lot 78

Baroque dining table, ca. 1700.Walnut wood. Iron fasteners. It has xylophages. Needs refinishing. Rear interior crossbeam.Measurements: 80 x 143 x 80 cm.17th century Spanish lyre-legged table, with a tabletop made from a single piece of wood, legs trimmed and decorated with carved details on the fronts and curved iron fastenings. As is customary for these tables, both legs are joined to the tabletop by wrought-iron fasteners. The lyre-leg table originated in Italy in the 16th century, often as a table for representation rather than for use. Inspired by the tables of classical antiquity (made of marble and with cross supports), they have two lateral supports which can be removed for transporting the piece of furniture, and which may have a lyre or vase profile. These cross supports are decorated with classical Renaissance motifs. In the centre of these supports is an H-shaped foot, which may be decorated, as shown here, with a wavy mixtilinear profile.
