A very large pair of 19th century Chinese famille rose 'Wu Shuang Pu' baluster vases, Qing dynasty, each vase with two applied turquoise and gilt handles in the form of archaistic dragons, the bodies are painted in bright polychrome enamels with the forty scattered characters from the Wu Shuang Pu, the 'Table of Peerless Heroes' each character is accompanied with a title and respective calligraphic inscription within various shaped panels including auspicious objects between squared scroll and floral bands at the rim and foot, 132 cm high, both with a carved gilt wood stand, 36 cm high The Wu Shuang Pu is a book of woodblock prints depicting 40 imagined heroes and heroines from the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty (3rd century BC to 13th century AD) by Jin Guliang, originally published in 1694  Provenance: From a country house collection, Avington Park, Hampshire  One vase broken and restored with one restored handle and one handle missing the lower section/terminal, the other vase with one restored and one re-attached handle, both with light wear to enamels, both stands with wear and losses
