Rare original vintage advertising poster issued during the Second World War in the Nazi occupied France for an arts exhibition organised by Mr. Serge Lifar and the Central Union of Decorative Arts Ballet and Dance in the Romantic Period 1800-1850 / Le Ballet et la Danse a l'Epoque Romantique held from January to April 1942 at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs Pavillon de Marsan, featuring an illustration of a lady in a ballet dress and shoes stood at the door with a bouquet of irises in a vase. Printed by Mourlot, Paris. Serge Lifar ( 1905 - 1986) was a Ukrainian ballet dancer and choreographer, famous as one of the greatest male ballet dancers of the 20th century. Not only a dancer, Lifar was also a choreographer, director, writer, theoretician about dance, and collector. As ballet master of the Paris Opera from 1930 to 1944, and from 1947 to 1958, he devoted himself to the restoration of the technical level of the Paris Opera Ballet, returning it to its place as one of the best companies in the world. The exterior is covered with a blue-and-white glaze, decorated with floral ornamentation on the shoulder, two dragons among clouds on the stomach and upward lotus-petals around the foot. In early days,prunus vases were made with a conical lid, indicating that they were utilitarian liquid containers. However, ornament and arrangement later became their priority function instead of utility. This one is characterized by delicate ornamentation and clear composition. ?? ?? ???????

Around them we see a Chinese lion, a little winged creature emanating from a round object unpacked from a cloth, a bonsai and red bats are hovering in the air. The appearance of the warrior and the bats might indicate that this is a depiction of the ghost and demon warrior Zhong Kui. He is usually depicted with black beard and a sword like here. The neck of the vase is decorated with floral pattern and a rocky landscape with bamboo plants.

The face is broad with small lips, the eye are closed in meditation. Large ear pendants decorate the elongated earlobes and a tiara sits on the head.
