A CAUCASIAN SWORD (SHASHQA), DATED 1315 AH (CIRCA 1897/8) with curved blade double-edged towards the point, formed with two narrow and a broad near full length fuller and with a lengthy calligraphic inscription on each face, struck with the bladesmith's mark on one face at the forte, silver hilt chased and traditional foliage against a punched ground enriched with niello, including characteristic eared pommel, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard with large mounts decorated en suite with the hilt, comprising locket with a tughra on the front (illegible) and signed 'amal-i khachir urfa 1315' (Work of Khachir, Urfa 1315, 1897-8 AD),and dated in a cartouche on the reverse, middle band, chape decorated with scrolling foliage issuant from a vase and two rings for suspension 81.5 cm; 32 1/8 in blade The inscriptions on the blade are from Qur'an 48:1 and the phrase: madad ya haydar-karar. "Help O Haydar Karar (i.e. 'Ali)" and: la ilah illa allah wahdahu la sharik lahu muhammad rasul allah "There is no god but God alone, He has no partner. Muhammad is the Messenger of God" It is likely that the maker, Khachir, is of Armenian origin.
