A PALACE SIZED WHITE JADE ‘CASSIA, LINGZHI AND ROCKS’ VASE AND COVERChina, 20th centuryThis palace sized lidded archaistic vessel of facetted baluster shape is topped by a dome-shaped lid with a chrysanthemum flower shaped finial, its neck with two open-worked S-shaped handles. It majestically stands on a rocky base enhanced with fungus of immortality (lingzhi) and from which is emanating a branch of cassia flowers which naturalistically grows over the front part of the body up to the neck. The below of the vase is also worked to render rocks. The vase is carved out a large single piece of nephrite jade. Its inner part is very well hollowed. A FRAGMENT OF AN IMPERIAL YELLOW, AUBERGINE AND GREEN ENAMELLED RELIEF DECORATED PORCELAIN VASEChina, Qing Dynasty, Daogang mark and of the periodThis anciently kintsugi-restored fragment of a vase of lantern shape is adorned with relief moulded vases with garlick necks. It is all covered with a beige yellow glaze but for the moulded vases which are enamelled in aubergine and green tones. One side of the vase is engraved with the wish “吉祥如意”, lit “Good Luck and Happiness”. The below is engraved with a six-character seal / zhuanshu mark of Emperor Daoguang. A MIRROR PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE ‘WU SHUANGPU’ PORCELAIN VASESChina, Qing Dynasty, Daoguang periodBoth of baluster hexagonal shape with hydra dragon applied handles to the neck, identically enamelled with historical figures from the “Table of Peerless Heroes” as well as with long-lasting calligraphies.H: 24,5 cmNotes:1. The historical figures depicted on those vases are Liu Chen (劉諶, 220-265), Prince of Beidi, the fifth son of Liu Shan, the second ruler of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period, and Yang Hu (221-278), a general of the Jin Dynasty, known for his humility and foresight.2. The “Wu Shuang Pu” (無雙普), i.e. the “Table of Peerless Heroes”, is a book of woodcut prints, first printed in 1694. This book contains the biographies and imagined portraits of 40 notable heroes and heroines from the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, all accompanied by a brief introduction and guided by a related poem in yuefu style.
