Six singles and two carvers (8) An almost identical set of ten chairs sold for £32,000 as part of the Leverhulme Collection at Sothebys, June 26/28 2001, Lot 164. Whilst these chairs do not directly replicate a plate from Thomas Chippendale`s Director, the designs for `Ribband Back Chairs` (pl. XV) do include two chairs which incorporate tassels into their backs similar to those on these chairs. The Leverhulme chairs formed part of the celebrated collection of furniture at Wardour Castle, the seat of the Lords Arundell. Furniture for which was largely supplied by a John Whitby, upholsterer.
