A set of eight George III mahogany dining chairs, with paper scroll, stylised shell and leaf carved top rails over pierced vase and tassel carved splats, drop in seats, a wavy carved frieze, C-scroll brackets and square legs. Six singles and two carvers (8) An almost identical set of ten chairs sold for £32,000 as part of the Leverhulme Collection at Sothebys, June 26/28 2001, Lot 164. Whilst these chairs do not directly replicate a plate from Thomas Chippendale`s Director, the designs for `Ribband Back Chairs` (pl. XV) do include two chairs which incorporate tassels into their backs similar to those on these chairs. The Leverhulme chairs formed part of the celebrated collection of furniture at Wardour Castle, the seat of the Lords Arundell. Furniture for which was largely supplied by a John Whitby, upholsterer.
Clarice Cliff Fantasque Wilkinson Ltd stepped vase, shape number 366 Rudyard, hand painted `trees and house` pattern, with green thatched roof house, red and black trees, on a circular base. Circa 1935, facsimile black marks to the base, and measuring approximately 15.5 cm high.
