A MINTONS PATE-SUR-PATE TWIN HANDLED VASE AND COVER, ATTRIBUTED TO L. SOLON (1835 – 1913) the baluster-shaped body decorated in relief overall with gilt floral and leaf and star patterns against an olive green ground, a cameo pattern cherub to the front flying through a ring of fire, wreath-shaped handles, the loose cover surmounted by a cone finial, gilt crowned Globe and impressed marks, shape no. 3271, various cyphers including swan cypher 1895, unsigned 25cm high including cover Marc-Louis Émanuel Solon (1835 – 1913) was a French porcelain decorator and the most famous practitioner of the pâte-sur-pâte technique, working for Sèvres from 1857 to 1870 and then in England for the Mintons factory from 1870 to 1904. The date cyphers puts this lot into the correct time frame for being produced by Mintons whilst Solon was working there. Although this piece is not signed, it seems that it may well have had a companion piece, illustrated below. As one can see the decoration is very similar to the front and the subject matter corresponds to Solon’s motifs. He favoured classical subjects inspired by the Renaissance art world and usually worked in white against a dark ground. The twin handled vases and other decorative objects that were produced as pairs very rarely depict the exact same scene in the pâte-sur-pâte technique, whilst the shape and other aspects of design are identical, as is the case here. The companion piece as illustrated in figure 1 is signed L. Solon and depicts a putti flying through a hoop surrounded by swallows. The lot on auction depicts a putti flying through a hoop of fire or flames. This would be typical, as the subject matter though never an exact copy would be similar. The reverse of both pieces is identical in the atypical gilt styling as well as the shape and form. It is not unusual that one piece is signed and the other not, hence the belief that this lot was a companion to another Solon piece and most likely the one illustrated below. The companion piece was sold by Christies in 1998 and resurfaced again later. Solon was widely acclaimed during his life time and his work commanded high prices. - S-L. F.
