This painting is strikingly reminiscent of Cedric Morris, who is famed for his cultivation of irises at Benton End and his paintings of the garden.*Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.Condition report: In its original 'Alfred Woolmark' frame. May benefit from a light clean. Under UV light, there are no obvious signs of retouching or restoration. There are two small dents to canvas lower right – please refer to images. While the dents are visible under close inspection, in our opinion they do not detract from the painting as a whole, as they are lost in the thick impasto and its busy design. There is some paint loss along the rebate of the frame, and a very small pinhole in each corner – please refer to images. In our opinion, the work is well-presented and is in generally good condition.

Deep craquelure in the darkest area lower right, under UV this fluoresces in an unusual way – please see images. Also, a very small hole on porcelain plate (refer to close-up images). Stretcher mark visible along the top and less so on left side. Left edge, there is thicker paint applied possibly from a previous frame, also paint loss along the left edge caused by the rebate of the frame. Under UV no obvious signs of retouching. Overall, in our opinion, the paint loss and craquelure do not detract from the work as a whole.
