Sui due lati del ventre sono intagliati in rilievo dei leoni buddhisti (shishi, detti anche 'cani di Fo') che giocano con la palla, simbolo di forza e potere. Sul coperchio troneggia un elefante sellato con un carico a forma di fiore buddhista, scolpito in tuttotondo. Le impugnature sono a forma di testa di leone con anelli pendenti. Sulla spalla incisioni di petali, sui bordi leiwen (meandri). Base in legno, intagliato a leiwen. Altezza 35,2 cm (base inclusa) - China, 18th Century “Mutton fat” jade with some darker inclusions. On both sides of the vessel body, there are high relief carvings of Buddhist lions (shishi, also called “Foo Dogs”) playing with a ball, symbol of strength and power. On the lid stands a saddled elephant with a load in the shape of a Buddhist flower, carved in the round. The handles are shaped like a lion's head with pendant rings. Colorazione molto chiara del turchese, con poche venature visibili soprattutto sul verso. Base a due piani in legno intarsiato di filo d’argento. Scheggiatura di una foglia laterale. 12,3 x 7 x 4,5 cm (base incollata) Un graticcio sostiene una pianta di zucca con fiori e piccoli frutti, che si alza fin alla spalla del vasetto. Sul coperchio, lavorato in tuttotondo, la pianta ha prodotto una zucca già matura. Sulla spalla del vaso sta tubando una coppia di colombi. La zucca è un frutto propizio, associato alla fertilità. Due piante di vite crescono ai lati del vaso; rami, foglie e frutti si estendono anche sul coperchio. Tra le foglie si stanno rincorrendo tre scoiattoli. Base in legno con intarsio di filo d’argento. 13,5 x 6,5 x 4,3 cm (base inclusa) La parola cinese "scoiattolo" (songshu??) è omofona della parola "pino" (songshu??), simbolo di lunga vita. "Uva" (tao?) è invece omofono di "pesca" (taozi??), il frutto per eccellenza dell'immortalità. Scoiattoli che giocano tra le piante d'uva erano un motivo di buon augurio molto diffuso in tarda epoca Qing. - Decoration in high relief and in the round, which includes the lid. Una foglia sopra la spalla del vasetto è scheggiata. 12 x 7 x 6,5 cm (base inclusa) Da un lato è raffigurata una scena drammatica in pieno svolgimento: un cacciatore, con un piede già tra le fauci della tigre, sta sollevando le braccia per colpirla con tutte le sue forze. Intaglio molto esperto, specialmente sotto i frutti dove rami e foglie formano una solida base. Il coperchio ha una piccola base circolare su cui sorgono una pesca e una foglia. Il pesco dell'immortalità cresce nel leggendario giardino di Xiwangmu (la "Regina madre dell'occidente"), nascosto tra le montagne Kunlun. Solo ogni mille anni quest albero produce i suoi frutti. La "mano di Buddha", un agrume non edibile apprezzato per la forma e il profumo, simboleggia benessere e fortuna. Base a due piani in legno intarsiato di filo d’argento. Due piccole scheggiature all’interno dell’orlo (vena nera visibile). Very skilful carving, particularly under the fruits where branches and leaves form a solid base. The lid has a small circular base on which there is a peach and a leaf. The peach tree of immortality grows in the legendary garden of Xiwangmu (the "Queen Mother of the West"), hidden among the Kunlun mountains. This tree produces its fruit only once every thousand years. The “Buddha's hand”, an inedible citrus fruit prized for its shape and scent, symbolizes well-being and good luck. Two level wooden base, inlaid in silver thread. Two small chips inside the rim (black vein visible). There is a recognisable repair on the back of the “hand of Buddha”; in the same area there are some chips on two leaves. 4.92 x 5 x 3 in. € 2000

Il funzionario è in posizione dinamica, con i piedi poggiati su nuvole. Nella mano destra innalza un lingotto (o un libro?), la sinistra è oggi vuota, ma conteneva forse un vasetto colmo, oggetto simbolo, insieme al lingotto d'oro, del dio della ricchezza Caishen. Eccellente stato di conservazione. Laccato e dipinto in nero, rosso e oro. Iscrizione con datazione di lato. Cartellino “1736 Cheng Lung” (Qianlong). Nicchia sigillata. Altezza 27 cm - China, Qing dynasty, 18th Century Carved wood painted in red, black, gold, and white. The official is in a dynamic position, with his feet resting on a cloud. His right hand holds up a ingot (or a book?), the left is now empty, but perhaps contained a full vase, which together with the gold ingot are symbols of the God of Wealth Caishen. Excellent condition. Lacquered and painted in black, red, and gold. Inscription with date on side. Tag reading “1736 Cheng Lung” (Qianlong). Niche is sealed. Height 10.63 in. € 600

Seven Mason's Ironstone vases 19th century, including a pair of spill vases of cylindrical form, a faceted ovoid vase and a two-handled vase, all richly decorated with gilt peony sprays on a mazarin blue ground, a pair of baluster vases similarly gilded with large flying insects, and a two-handled vase with flower sprays and dragonflies, all on a rich blue ground, some damages, 21cm max. Lot 131

A Frankfurt faïence vase early 18th century, painted in blue in the Chinese manner with three figures beside a large elephant, the reverse with three further figures, the flared foot with a stylized leaf garland, blue circle mark to the base, the cover lacking, 27.5cm.

A Delft vase and cover early 18th century, the baluster form painted with a bird perched on a flowering peony branch, within a narrow floral cartouche, and a larger Delft vase of flattened octagonal form, painted with a figure fishing before buildings, some restoration, the second vase lacking its cover, 26cm max. (3)

Lot 175

A Staffordshire figural spill vase 19th century, modelled as a deer standing before flowering bocage, its head turned to sinister, a hollow between the ears to receive the spills, one leg broken and restuck, restoration to one ear, 17.7cm.

A GM & CJ Mason Ironstone vase and cover c.1820-30, moulded with vertical flutes and richly decorated with gilt peony sprays, moths and other flying insects all reserved on a mazarin blue ground, some restoration, 42.5cm. (2) Provenance: the Doug Godden Collection.

Lot 395

A pair of Staffordshire porcelain figures of street traders c.1830-40, one of a female fish seller with a bowl of her wares resting on her head, the other of a man with his wares in a sack, calling his cries to his customers, a Staffordshire pottery figure of J H Hackett in his role as Falstaff, and another of a pair of musicians forming a spill vase group, 28.5cm. (4) Provenance: from a private collection. The street traders purchased from Christie's in 2004, Falstaff in 1991.
