Many wrongly accredited her husband Richard Burton for contributing vast sections of this text, and in the preface she explains that this book was an experiment of writing as if it were talking with friends instead of being an address for the Royal Geographical Society; perhaps trying to establish her own authorial voice as a female travel writer. Publishing Impressions of a Tenderfoot during a Journey in Search of Sport in the Far West (London, John Murray) in 1890, which detailed the account of a trip made across several months to Canada. Isabel Burton's second book that details a journey made with her husband to India, via Arabia and Egypt between 1875 and 1876. Although the work is predominantly focused on India, there is a chapter devoted to Jeddah and some notes on Triste, where this particular voyage began. Penzer notes this issue was rather a failure, very few copies being sold. Hence it is very rare, and fetches a large price when it turns up, which is very seldom. The map described as 'A Modern Map of Shropshire' drawn from the latest surveys, corrected and improved by the best authorities, approx 19 x 24 cms together with a copy of 'The Gentleman's Diary' or 'The Mathematical Repository', An Almanack for the year of our Lord 1791, being the 'Third after Bissextile'. Printed for the Company of Stationers and sold by Robert Horsfield at their hall in Ludgate Street, 1791". (3)
1937 / 1940 Pattern Battle Dress Trousers, with 1937 pattern belt loops to the waist and ankle tabs. Button exposed front shell dressing pocket and map pocket with concealed flap. Rear pocket also with concealed flap. Label has been removed but WD stamp has date letter “O” for 1942. Some light areas of moth but generally good condition.
