Hollar (Wenceslaus, engraver), A New and Exact Map of Asia and the Ilands thereunto belonging, [1666], engraved map, hand coloured in outline with title cartouche, laid down onto paper with some repaired tears, 385 x 490 mm, mounted. An uncommon anonymous map. There is no imprint but the British Library have identified it as being engraved by Hollar and the quality of the engraving certainly bears out this attribution. (1)

Ptolemy (Claudius), Prima Europe Tabula, Ulm: Johann Reger, 1486, double-page woodcut map with bold contemporary hand colouring, trapezoidal frame bearing Ptolemaic degrees of latitude and longitude, some expert restoration, 370 x 520 mm (at the widest point), Latin text to verso. The second issue of the 1482 map, also printed at Ulm, which was the first woodcut map of the British Isles and the first to be printed outside of Italy. This 1486 edition is more usually found with ochre colouring to the sea areas although other blue coloured copies are known (see Royal Geographical Society Collection; Sotheby's 20 September 1984 lot 406; Sotheby's 10 May 2007 lot 164).
