America.- James (Edwin) Account of an Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, 3 vol., first English edition, half-titles to vol.2 and 3, large folding engraved map with tape repairs to verso, folding engraved plate with geological profiles, 8 aquatint plates, 2 hand-coloured and another partially so, all with slight stain to lower corner, extra-illustrated by the insertion of 3 hand-coloured lithograph plates of Native Americans after Catlin from Prichard's Natural History of Man (1842) mounted on verso of each title, a few leaves carelessly opened, vol.1 U8 and X1 torn from partially adhering, with slight loss of text, uncut in modern half morocco over marbled boards, [Abbey, Travel 650; Howes J41; Sabin 35683], 8vo, 1823.⁂ Major work of Western Americana, originally named the Yellowstone Expedition, detailing the exploration of the trans-Mississippi West under Major Stephen Long, following the expeditions of Lewis & Clarke and Zebulon Pike. Edwin James was the botanist, geologist, and surgeon for the expedition and this work is based on his own records, the brief geological notes of Major Long, and the early journals of Thomas Say, the expedition's zoologist. This London edition follows the Philadelphia publication in 3 volumes of 1822-23, has some additional text, the plates re-engraved and two maps combined into one.Provenance: Bibliotheca Triniciavelli (embossed stamp in various places).

Blunt (Lady Anne) Bedouin Tribes of the Euphrates, edited by W.S.Blunt, 2 vol., first edition, half-titles, 12 wood-engraved plates, folding colour map, folding pedigree of Arabian thoroughbreds, without 32pp. advertisements at end of vol.2, some markings to text with many Arabic names neatly underlined in red ink, some foxing, mostly at beginnings and ends, contemporary half calf, red and green roan labels, a little rubbed, 8vo, 1879.⁂ Lady Anne Blunt, daughter of Ada Lovelace and granddaughter of Lord Byron, was the founder of the Crabbet Arabian Stud. She travelled throughout Arabia and the Middle East buying horses from Bedouin tribesmen to take back to England for breeding.

Minney (1895-1979) had a varied carrier as journalist, film producer and playwright and was a passionate traveller. The present volume recount a trek through the Himalayas on horseback.

West Africa was an area of increasing commercial interest to Europeans; the plates depict views of the numerous fortresses on the coast of various European nations, and also of animals and birds of the area. This is one of two variants published in 1705, with the same pagination but slightly different imprints.

Adams (Robert) The Narrative of Robert Adams, a Sailor, who was Wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa...was Detained Three Years in Slavery by the Arabs of the Great Desert, and Resided Several Months in the City of Tombuctoo, first edition, folding engraved map with routes supplied by hand in blue and yellow, from the library of Louis-Philippe King of the French at Neuilly with small ink library stamp "Bibliotheque du Roi Neuilly" to title, contemporary ink inscription in French to head of title, light water-staining or cockling to upper margin of some leaves, contemporary half roan, by René Simier, handsome gilt spine with coat-of-arms of Louis-Philippe at head and monogram "LPO" at foot, signed at foot, rubbed, 4to, 1816.⁂ One of the few accounts of a white man sold into slavery, and one of the earliest descriptions of the city of Timbuctoo. The work was initially thought to be a hoax but details were verified by both Banks and Barrow.Louis-Philippe, King of the French (1773-1850) ruled France from 1830-48, when he was forced to abdicate and flee to England. The books from his various libraries were sold at auction in 1852-3.René Simier (1772-1843) was one of the foremost French bookbinders of the 19th century and was appointed bookbinder to the King.

The frontispiece, hand-coloured in this copy although not called for as such by Abbey, "shows Campbell against a background of South African scenery: he is holding an umbrella, an object not usually the emblem of an explorer". We have been able to trace only one copy at auction, in 2008.

Southey (Robert).- James (Isaac) Providence Displayed: or, the Remarkable Adventures of Alexander Selkirk...who lived Four Years and Four Months by himself, on the Island of Juan Fernandez..., first edition, Robert Southey's copy with his neat ink signature to foot of title and his trimmed wood-engraved bookplate by Thomas Bewick on half-title, engraved map frontispiece, woodcut illustrations, first and last leaf browned, title soiled at foot, a few small stains, old boards, uncut, rubbed, rebacked in cloth preserving old paper label titled in manuscript in Southey's hand, new endpapers, 8vo, Bristol, Biggs and Cottle, 1800.⁂* Alexander Selkirk was marooned on Juan Fernandez Island, off the coast of Chile, from 1705 to 1709, when he was rescued by Capt. Woodes Rogers. His story inspired Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe.ESTC records only 5 UK copies, 2 being in the British Library.

Southey (Robert).- Cottle (Joseph) The Fall of Cambria, a Poem, 2 vol., first edition, Robert Southey's copy with his neat ink inscription "Robert Southey from his friend the Author" to half-title and his trimmed wood-engraved bookplate by Thomas Bewick to verso of titles, half-titles, engraved map frontispiece to vol.1 (offset onto title), occasional spotting, with long newspaper cutting 'A Bristol Bookseller's Recollections' concerning the author and S.T.Coleridge pasted to rear endpapers of both volumes, additional ink inscription "E.A.Taylor June 1843" to half-titles, contemporary Cottonian binding of red leafy-patterned fabric over boards with manuscript paper labels to spines, uncut, a little rubbed, spines faded and a little worn at foot, labels slightly chipped, 12mo, 1808.⁂ Joseph Cottle (1770-1853) was a Bristol bookseller and publisher; he also wrote epic poetry which was ridiculed by Byron. He met Southey and Coleridge in 1794 when they stayed in Bristol preparing to emigrate to America to found a "pantisocratic" community. The project was abandoned but Cottle helped them financially in return for the copyright of poems which he then published.Many of Southey's books were bound in this fashion, executed by his daughters or female friends using coloured cotton prints over the original worn boards. They filled a room in his house which became known as the "Cottonian Library".

A British force was sent to rescue them, culminating in the Battle of Magdala in 1868. The British won, Theodore committed suicide, and the fortress was destroyed.

Melly (George) Khartoum, and the Blue and White Niles, 2 vol., second edition, presentation copy from the author to his niece Bessy Bright inscribed on front free endpaper of vol.1, half-titles, engraved frontispieces and map, all slightly foxed and mounted on stubs, contemporary ink signature to head of titles, attractive contemporary maroon morocco with decorative gilt border, spine gilt in compartments, g.e., spines slightly rubbed, lower covers a little stained, [Blackmer 1107], 8vo, 1852.⁂ Account of a journey through Egypt and the Sudan. Melly, a Unitarian from Liverpool, became a businessman and politician active in social reform regarding juvenile crime, education and women's suffrage. He married the sister of his friend at Rugby School Henry Arthur Bright, later a shipping magnate and friend of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Melly's inscription reads, "Bessy Bright, October 1888. These volumes, provided with a new dress, were returned to his charming niece by her affectionate uncle - The author - October 1852". He presumably bought a second-hand copy and had it rebound for his niece's birthday.
