Bicurin was one of the most prolific scholars Russia has ever seen. In 1805 he was named leader of the 9th Russian Mission to Peking and head of the Sretenskii monastery at Peking. During his 14 year stay there he learnt Chinese and compiled his own dictionary as well as writing 6 other works for later publication. Volume one gives a detailed account of the journey and the second volume a detailed examination of the geographical and political condition of the Mongols and their life and customs.
