The recipient being David Wedgwood Benn (1928-2017), Writer and BBC producer whose passion and expertise in Soviet affairs led to a distinguished career in the World Service, whose Guardian newspaper obituary of 1/3/2017 fascinatingly illuminates the back story as to how this Churchill presentation copy came to being "In an anonymous letter printed in the Times on 6 July 1940, the 11 year old David Wedgwood Benn, who feared being evacuated to Canada, explained he would "rather be bombed to fragments than leave England". His letter caught the eye of the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who instructed his office to identify the author. They did and Churchill sent the young boy an autographed volume of one of his own works in recognition of his patriotic defiance...", David Wedgwood Benn was the son of William Wedgwood Benn, DSO, DFC, PC (1877-1960), politician, Secretary of State for India 1929-31, Secretary of State for Air 1945-46, decorated RAF officer who flew operationally in both the First and Second World Wars, and, at the age of 67, flew several flights operationally as an RAF Bomber Aircrew gunner and is possibly the oldest man to have done so.
