Diary – South America a fine travel diary compiled by C H Leach an Englishman from Hatch End Middlesex sent by his employers an insurance company to conduct business on their behalf in South America. The diary covers his tour through Brazil Uruguay Argentina and Chile together with an album of more than 100 photographs taken by him during the journey all of which are captioned and include railway farming and topographical interest as well as pictures of his friends. The diary includes his record of many rail journeys including the Trans Andean crossing from Montevideo to Los Andes. He also records meeting the Chilean President and many other notable people. Laid to linen in good condition overall approx 35x26ins together with a duplicate of the map.

WWI German intelligence manual on British Indian Army Published in German in Nov 1915 in Lille France by the AOK 6 (Armeeoberkommando = Hqs. 6thArmy) and signed off by the command’s intelligence officer Lubecke. Softcover wrapper 8 by 5.5 ins 37 pp glossy stock with 8 b&w photo plates (printed on one side only) and a folded map at the back. Condition: Some foxing to wrapper and scattered light pencil underlining in text. Binding is tight; there are no loose or unsightly pages; overall very good condition considering age and use as a field manual in a war zone. This manual which good authority holds to be very scarce contains background information photographs foreign language specimens a condensed dictionary and similar material intended to assist in the interrogation of Indian Army POWs captured by the Germans on the Western Front in France during the First World War. Key subjects mentioned in the test include: The 3rd (Lahore) and the 7th (Meerut) Divisions; the Indian Cavalry Division the Ferlsipur Brigade and its component regiments the Djallandar Brigade and its Sikh regiment; the 1st Manchester Regiment (multi-national) among many other units contributing forces to the Allied front. The manual describes the native soldiers of whom an estimated 160 000 fought in France and Belgium objectively and with knowledgeable respect for their training and fighting ability. It encourages German soldiers to treat their captives well “as they can be of good use to us in the present and the future” (p23). There is a reference to the POW camp at Zossen – Wünsdorf near Berlin where thousands of British Indian troops were imprisoned.

India – Punjab - history of the Sikhs Rare 1849 ‘suppressed’ First edition in original blind stamped clot binding. The first complete non-bias history of the Sikhs written by Capt J D Cunningham of the British Indian Army. The account was seen as the most honest account of the history of the Sikhs with Cunningham even stating that Sikh Generals were in the pay of the British in the First Sikh War. For this reason this 1849 first edition was suppressed by Dalhousie and is most rare. Cunningham was ordered to revise the book and was demoted causing his death soon after. The book is widely seen as the epitome Sikh study and this edition is extremely scarce especially in original blind stamped cloth binding. Professional repair to the upper spine otherwise very fine complete with map hand coloured in outline.
India – Rigobert Bonne Map – Sikh 1780 Punjab. A rare early (1780) engraved map of India by cartographer Rigobert Bonne. Hand coloured this map is the first known map to recognize Sikh Misl territory in the Punjab/Lahore region. The word Schiecks on the map refers to the Sikhs. For an identical map please refer to the Arts of the Sikh kingdoms (Canadian Collection). The Misl refers to the twelve sovereign states in the Sikh Confederacy during the late 18th Century Rigobert Bonne (French 1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. The work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail historical importance and overall aesthetic appeal.
India – large Delhi & Punjab states map. A 1928 Punjab map outlining the Punjab States published by Survey of India Office Calcutta at scale of I in:32 inches. The coloured map in outline shows various Punjab princely states including Kapurthala Patiala Chamba Bahwalpur etc. Folding map backed with lined. Opens to 20 inches x 24 inches closes in card covers with title in manuscript.

Folding map opens up to size of 80cm x 100cms coloured in outline and strengthened with buckram backing. Bound in blue cloth binding with title in manuscript on front board. From the library of Sir Conrad Corfield secretary to the Viceroy of Indian 1921-47 with his bookplate to the front pastedown.

Railway Maps. Offical Railway Map of the West of England,together with Offical Railway Map of the South of England, pub. The Railway Clearing House, 1908, two folding lithographed maps joined together to depict the whole of Southern England from Cornwall to Kent, original hand colouring, laid onto linen in sections as issued, a few minor fold tears, the whole 77 x 221 cm, contained in contemp. black sheep covers stamped in gilt ñSouthern Railway. A small collection belonging to Francis Justin Collins, including 2 cap badges and a pair of shoulder titles of the Liverpool Scottish Regt, a plastic economy AAC cap badge, his cloth pilot`s wings (and duplicate), rank badges, Africa Star tunic ribbon with silver rosette denoting North Africa 1942-43, a regimental kilt, two photograph albums and loose photographs and postcards showing Collins in the Liverpool Scottish in 1939 and as a flying officer in the RAF, group photos 129 Squadron, etc, a military compass in case, 3 silk and another map, various ephemera, an aeroplane clock mounted in a wooden stand Francis Justin Collins, a Liverpool descendant of the Irishman Michael Collins, enlisted in the Liverpool Scottish (a Territorial Bn of the Cameron Highlanders) in the late 30s and transferred to the RAF, was commissioned and flew bombers in North Africa. Des Voeux.), Defence and War Medals, good very fine and better, together with dress miniature awards, a large hand drawn and coloured map on velum `Map of German Offences 1918`, 122 x 149cm WW1 Machine Gunners` Pocket Book, Field Service Pocket Book, and The Mounted Officer`s Book on Horses and Mules for Transport, Illustrated, red cloth hard back and a photograph album assembled by Des Voeux, covering his service with the Staffordshire Regiment from Devonport, France and Flanders, Trench Life and Hospital Ships the latter section shows a series of images titled `with 46 Squadron on 3 days course at Le Hameau. Jan1-4th 1918` M.C., London Gazette 3.6.1918 2nd Lt. (A.Capt.) John Hamilton Des Voeux. N. Staff. R., attd. M.G. Corps. Major John Hamilton Des Voeux (b.1898), Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Hampshire Regiment (aged 16) 3.9.1914, advanced to Major, North Staffordshire Regiment and attached to the Machine Gun Corps, according to the biography included with this lot Des Voeux was present at the Jallianwala Massacre. The Jallianwala or Armritsar Massacre took place on the afternoon of 13th April 1919, about 10,000 people including women and children gathered the garden of Jallianwala Bagh near Armritsar, India to hold a peaceful protest against the arrest of two leaders of the Indian National Congress. The order was given by The British General, Edward Dyer without any kind of warning to open fire at the unarmed crowd. For twenty minutes or so the soldier`s unloaded bullets at the crowd, killing 400 and severely wounding a 1000. The aftermath of the massacre resulted in an Indian uprising and insurgence and ultimately led to independence for Indian. (12)

Potters Bar Zeppelin L31. An original mimeographed copy of Chief Inspector Walter Crook`s duty report for the night of the 1st October, Enfield Police Station, 2nd October 1916,beginning at 6:59pm, then at 11:02 pm the first sounds of an airship engine are noted, by 11:38 pm a Zeppelin was sighted travelling east and giving readings for the following fifteen minutes, noting that she caught fire at 11:55 pm and then began to fall, then `She came to the ground & there was a momentary increased glare of light. We verified the position from our Map & reported at once to OR that we estimated the position where the Zeppelin fell at Potters Bar. During the time the Zeppelin was in sight there was not so much gunfire as usual, & that only from about 11:40 to 11:46 pm. Two or three shells seemed to come very near her & one in particular appeared to burst very close to & slightly above her nose... `, continuing to record further details following the event until they were dismissed by OR at 3:17 am, 4 pp. on four sheets, damp stained, soiled and frayed with some bleeding of ink but no loss of legibility of any text, folio The Zeppelin L31 was under the command of Kapitan Heinrich Mathy, a Zeppelin flying ace on his fifteenth raid. On this occasion Second Lieutenant Wulstan Tempest engaged the Zeppelin just before midnight and it crashed near Potters Bar with all nineteen crew dying. It was the second downing of a German airship in the area in a month, a wooden airship having been brought down over Cuffley on the 3rd September. Tempest was later promoted to Major and order the DSO. (1)
