David Woodlock (British, 1842-1929) The Black Eagle at Houghton, 1914 oil on canvas 19 x 24cm (7.41 x 9.36in) Provenance: Private collection, Huntingdon David Woodlock was born in Golden, Eire, but interestingly he is known as a Liverpool artist. He studied at the Liverpool School of Art, was a founder member of the Liverpool Sketching Club, and a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts. He exhibited 118 works at the Walker Gallery there. He lived also in Sheffield and Leamington, Warwickshire. Much of his work is of thatched cottages, with old English gardens-roses, hollyhocks etc, and a pretty girl. Woodlock painted the Black Eagle mill from another angle and with a pretty girl in the foreground, and also the White Horse Inn, St Ives with its wisteria in bloom (illustrated in Artists of the Ouse, by Bridget Flanagan, p.88). The Black Eagle windmill is marked on the OS map on Houghton Hill in 1887, then the later map of 1901, and 1901 with 1913 additions. It is no longer there on the 1924 map. The Mill House remains today. The Mill was described by the artist E M Wimperis in his article in The Leisure Hour,1895, `Favourite Sketching Grounds, The Hemingfords`: Of the mill and lock at Houghton I have already spoken, but there are in addition many fine groups of trees-and a very curious windmill, which has four dormer windows in its base. It stands on tolerably high ground, in fact the only eminence here, the country generally being very flat". Very few of the artists chose to paint the windmill-they all seemed to much prefer what everyone knows as Houghton Mill-the water mill. The windmill on top of a bare hill was not nearly as picturesque as the river
