The text certifies that the trustees and attorneys of Lorenzo De Zavala, Joseph Vehlein, and David G. Burnet give Thomas E. Davis....their consent to the location of and holding in severalty, One Sitio of Land. Very Fine+.The Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company was founded in order to promote the colonization of lands, located immediately to the east of the Austin Colony between the San Jacinto and Sabine Rivers. The price was five cents an acre, but the certificates were of little worth and, perhaps fraudulent. A great piece of early Texas history. From the John E. Herzog Collection

In the 1850s, before the petroleum industry began, whale oil was widely in use for illuminating and lubricating purposes, but the whale oil had to be refined before it could be utilized. W. L.
