Amery, L. S. (General Editor) The Times History of the War in South Africa 1899-1902 Unmatched set of this landmark work on the South African War. Seven demy 8vo volumes: volumes I and II of three-quarter calf with cloth sides and spines tooled in compartments and gilt-lettered, with marbled endpapers. The remaining five volumes in original red cloth; top and bottom edges of boards ruled in blind, and spines with gilt lettering and medallion device in each case. Top edges gilt in all seven volumes; pp. xxiv + 392, xviii + 467, xviii + 597, xviii + 597, xxviii + 614, xv + (i) + 622, (viii) + 209; illustrated with plates, plans, maps and pocket maps, all of which present, with the exception of the General Map of South Africa, missing from the first volume, which has been re-bound, without the front pocket. The condition of the seven volumes is variable, that of the first two, re-bound books being very good, with a little rubbing and occasional fox spot, the spines of the remaining books characteristically sunned and somewhat mottled with traces of fishmothing. The edges of the boards in volumes V to VII show some damp-staining, which is more pronounced to the lower board of Volume VI. Scattered, moderate foxing is noted throughout, and the upper hinge of Volume IV is just holding. Maps generally very good, but with very occasional minor creasing and soiling, and short marginal tears. A good working set. (Mendelssohn I, p. 36, Hackett, pp. 1, 124) An admirably objective account of the Anglo-Boer War and its aftermath, considering the contemporary perspective of the authors. `A comprehensive history of the war in seven volumes published in the years 1900-1909. A complete account of military operations in South Africa from 1899-1902 together with chapters on the political and historical background to the conflict and the work of reconstruction following hostilities. Volume VII (Index and Appendices) contains much useful information including a chronological table of events from 1899-1909, regimental casualties with period of service of each regiment and engagements at which present, official table of casualties with summary and extensive bibliography. An important and well produced work. Possibly the foremost reference pertaining to the second Boer War.` - Hackett: South African War Books, p. 1. Menpes, Mortimer War Impressions. Being a Record in Colour Number 137 of the Edition De Luxe, limited to three hundred and fifty copies, signed by the author-artist. 4to; original pale buckram over bevelled boards, with gilt lettering to spine and upper cover; top edge gilt; pp. xiv + 254; several colour plates with captioned tissue-guards; facsimile letters and battle plan at rear. Spine darkened; cloth partially sunned and lightly rubbed; corners a little bumped; extremities somewhat worn; sporadic, moderate foxing (the plates largely unaffected); map browned, a bit creased and slightly frayed. A very good copy of this rare edition. (Hackett, p. 169; Mendelssohn I, p. 1008) `Although the great charm of this beautiful book is the collection of coloured portraits and illustrations, the letterpress is entertaining and interesting. It is stated that the Boers were physically brave, but had `quaint ideas of right and wrong.` It is remarked that no clergyman of any prominence joined the British forces, and that the chaplains seemed to have little influence with the men; on the other hand, reference is made to the many celebrated surgeons and doctors who did splendid service during the hostilities.` - Mendelssohn. L`Ange, Gerald Urgent Imperial Service: South African Forces in German South West Africa 1914-1915 8vo; original yellow boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; facsimile map on endpapers; pp. (ix) + 352; illustrations. Trace of spotting to top edge; spine panel a little sunned. Near fine condition. `South Africa`s first entry into war was surreptitious. In 1914, without consulting Parliament or the public, the government of General Louis Botha committed the country to fighting for the British Empire against Germany in South West Africa. Though ratified later by Parliament, the cabinet`s decision split a populace that was still trying to heal the wounds left after the Boer War. This, and the creation of the Union, ignited an armed rebellion that came close to civil war. And then, the rebellion put down, these same sworn enemies united with their English-speaking countrymen to fight against the Germans in South West Africa - under the Union Jack. Invading over the Orange River and from the sea, they fought their way across deserts that their enemy had considered impenetrable. The Germans fought skilfully but had no counter to General Botha`s military brilliance. They were further thwarted by the dashing and unorthodox tactics of the commandos and the astonishing forced marches of the South African infantry.` Publisher Place: Johannesburg Publisher: Ashanti Publishing Publication Date: 1991 Reserve: $20 Click here to view further details and to bid

Baker, E C R Ace of Aces: M St J Pattle, Top Scoring Allied Fighter Pilot of World War II 8vo; original pale boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper housed in removable protector; pictorial endpapers; pp. xvii + (i) + 228, incl. index; map; liberally illustrated with photographs and reproductions of contemporary artwork. Spine panel very slightly sunned; trace of spotting to top edge, occasional fox spot elsewhere; loosely inserted newspaper clipping relating to Pattle`s life. Near fine condition. `Here is the story of an outstanding fighter pilot and a great leader of men, the unknown ace of the Royal Air Force. Pattle was born in the Cape and raised on a lonely farm in Namibia. He discovered early in his life a keen desire within him to fly. He was rejected by the South African Air Force in 1933, but became more determined than ever to achieve his ambition. Pattle left South Africa to join the Royal Air Force before the war and achieved a success out of all proportion to expectations. He did much to help the hard-pressed troops on the ground. On 20 April 1941, a sick man, he led the remnants of his own and another squadron against an armada of over a hundred German aircraft. In the desperate fighting that followed, he shot down at least two enemy aircraft and then dived to the rescue of one of his pilots. The odds were too heavy and seconds later his aircraft, with Pattle slumped over the controls, crashed in the Bay of Eleusis.` Publisher Place: Johannesburg Publisher: Ashanti Publication Date: 1992 Reserve: $25 Click here to view further details and to bid

Agar-Hamilton, J. A. I., and L. C. F. Turner Crisis in the Desert. May - July 1942 8vo; original blue cloth titled in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. x + (iv) + 368, incl. index; several folding maps and battle plans in colours; large folding map at rear; plates; sketch maps in text. Dustwrapper edgeworn, with some archival tape repairs to reverse, and a little rubbed; traces of foxing to edges, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. `This book is concerned with the most critical phase of the campaign in the Western Desert. Investigations were begun in 1942 to establish the facts relating to the fall of Tobruk, but in due course the demands of historical perspective required that the field of enquiry should expand to include the German assault on the Gazala Line, with Rommel`s consequent invasion of Egypt, his remarkable victory at Mersa Matruh, and the decisive check to his ambitions at Alamein. The fate of the 2nd South African Division at Tobruk, and the movements of the 1st South African Division between Gazala and El Alamein, require for their appreciation a grasp of the intentions and operations of the Eighth Army, which the authors have attempted to provide, and against this background have been fitted the movement and interplay of the various South African units and formations.` - Preface. (Hackett, p. 150) `The prisoners were taken to the Staats Model School at Pretoria, and Churchill, Brockie, and Haldane made many plans to escape, which were doomed to failure, but eventually Churchill got away on December 12th; the others were observed by a sentry, and dared not make the attempt, but later on they managed to hide themselves under the floorings of the prison, and being joined by Le Mesurier, they disappeared on February 26, 1900, to the consternation and mystification of their guards, who never supposed they were hiding in the building. They were supplied with necessities from time to time by their fellow officers who were in the secret, but found no means to escape till March 16th, when all the prisoners were removed and the building deserted, when finding the coast clear, they succeeded in getting outside, eluded the few passers by, and were soon on the veld. The officers were hidden by some friends amongst bales of wool, which were put on a truck attached to a passenger train bound for Delagoa Bay, which took them safely across the border.` - Mendelssohn I, pp. 669,670. The survey is part of the Council`s £10,000,000 scheme to remove all Natives from Western Native Township, Sophiatown, Martindale and Newclare to the Orlando/Pimville area. In all, according to statistics about twelve months old, 20,300 families or about 100,000 Natives will have to be moved.`Rand Daily Mail, 13th June, 1950The Non-European Affairs Department of the Johannesburg City Council in 1950 conducted a Survey of the Western Areas, which included Martindale and Sophiatown, Newclare, Albertville and the Western Native Township. This survey is part of the ` Western Areas Scheme* ` for the removal of the Non-Europeans from the Western Areas of Johannesburg and had been amended several times since it was first mooted in 1937, the latest amendment having been drafted in 1944. After Riots in the Western Areas over 1949/50, a Ministerial conference decided that a survey of the areas was urgently required for further `planning`. The forced removal of the residents of Sophiatown began on 9 February 1955 under the Western Areas Removal Scheme The City of Johannesburg established new townships to the Southwest (SOWETO-SOuth WEst TOwnships) for Africans evicted from the Western Areas of Johannesburg.[*Scheme A: Removal of Whole Population, Scheme B: Moving Tenants & Sub-Tenants only, Scheme C: Moving Overcrowded Families,Scheme D: Moving Non-Europeans from Sophiatown and Martindale.] This document explains the context, the mechanics and the challenges, in municipal-speak and without emotion, of the intended forced removal of a vast number of families to essentially barren veld. It gives the scope of the task ahead and what has to be done in the creation of The Modern South African Tragedy. If there is such a thing as the banality of evil then this is it.
