Plowman, George T The Natal Civil Service List 1895 (with folding map) 220 x 150 [See also Lot 308] The 1895 issue of the Natal Civil Service List was the first of the series, superseding the civil establishment returns in the colony`s blue books. On the front paste-down is an 1895 date-stamp of the Chief Engineer of the Natal Government Railways. The full title-page is reproduced in one of the images. The contents far exceed the expected civil establishment and pension lists, which take up only a third of the space. In addition, the colony`s Constitution is reproduced, as are the Civil Service Act, 15 miscellaneous lists (consuls, JPs, advocates, attorneys, land surveyors, field cornets and so on), the Civil Service Calendar, the Civil Service Board, examination results and papers, as well as several indexes. Indeed, one need hardly look further for details of the state of the Natal Colony in the last decade of the 19th century. The red hard pebble-cloth boards, gilt lettered to the front and the (sunned) spine, are in excellent condition, with the extremities only lightly rubbed. The binding is tight. The endpapers are sunned and the first and last text leaves are foxed. The contents - xvii + 167 pp + an excellent copy of the folding colour map of the Colony - are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured. Very Good Pietermaritzburg [Printed by M W Watson] 1895

Bosman, A M Cattle Farming in South Africa (1932) 220 x 145 x 60 South African Agricultural Series - Volume 10. The back endpaper is unmarked, as are the 458 pp of illustrated text, appendixes and index + 6 pp of publisher`s announcements + frontispiece, folding map, 6 other inserted maps, 28 other inserted photographs and graphs (2 present but loose). This ex-library copy has a reference number on the spine and a cancelled stamp and former owner sticker on the front free endpaper. There is another owner signature on the dedication page and the front page edge. The remains of a school prize label are on the front paste-down. All-in-all, this is an acceptable copy of a now rare reference book. [Footnote. Professor Bosman, whose favourite breed was the Africander (illustrated on the frontispiece), is not to be confused with Professor Bonsma (then a young man included in Bosman`s acknowledgments) of the Mara Research Station in today`s Limpopo Province, who famously developed the Bonsmara (from Bonsma and Mara, mainly from the Africander, which may now be the country`s most populous cattle breed.] Good+ South Africa Central News Agency 1932

All the original plates are present but the route map is missing. A 2 pp preface updates the position in and around the expedition area of Central Africa and makes a charge of `criminality` against the Portuguese and German authorities for their `connivance in the smuggling of arms and ammunition by the Arabs`. Half-bound in maroon calf and matching marbled paper-boards. Both boards are extensively rubbed, as are the corners. The original spine cover, with gilt lettering and rules, has been laid down on a new matching leather spine. New decorative endpapers and a new backstrip with head and tail bands have been added so that the binding is again tight. All page edges are gilt. There are neat library stamps at the front, including `not for circulation` on the original front free endpaper. The contents - xiii + 280 pp of text and index + frontispiece and 7 other inserted portraits and other plates on art paper - are unmarked and there is no foxing, just a few small brown stains near the front. Facsimile reproduction of the 1881 edition with a new Foreword. His compelling ambition was to follow in the footsteps of Dr Livingstone and, specifically, to reach Luanda by way of the Zambesi valley and across Angola. That he failed in his principle objective does not diminish his stature as a traveller-explorer nor, indeed, the fascination which modern readers will derive from his meticulous accounts of the journeys, the third of which took him to the upper reaches of the Zambesi River. Sir John Ross NARRATIVE OF A SECOND VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A NORTH WEST PASSAGE 4to. The full title of this work is: Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage And of a Residence In the Arctic Regions During the Years 1929-1933. 2 Vols. including the less common Vol.2 `Appendix of The Narrative......`. Large 4to. Vol.1 is 740pp. and Vol.2 circa. 380pp. Both volumes contain many plates which include steel engravings, hand coloured lithographs and hand coloured mezzotints. Vol. 1 also has a large fold-out map. All plates are present apart from a fold-out chart which seems to be missing from the end of Vol. 1. This set has been bound in modern quarter leather and marbled boards by South African craft binder, Peter Carstens. There is moderate foxing and staining throughout, occasionally more severe, most noticeable on the frontispieces and title pages. This seems to be an endemic problem with this book. However many of the plates have been spared and the set is not unattractive. The large fold out map has several closed tears. There is a pencil signature along the bottom edge of the title page of Vol.1. The many photos supplied should give a reasonable idea of the condition. Overall only a good set in a nice modern binding and with a very low reserve price. Please note that this item is very heavy and shipping outside of South Africa would be costly. Good London A.W. Robinson, Edward Biblical Researches in Palestine and the Adjacent Regions (vols 1 and 3 of second edition of 1856) 220 x 150; shelf space 9.5 cm; 2.1 kg In 1841, when Edward Robinson, then professor of Biblical Literature in the Union Theological Seminary in New York, first published this work, it was arranged in 3 vols, all devoted to his travels in 1838 with various companions and hosts. (One of his hosts in Cairo and Jerusalem was the Duke of Northumberland, to whom the work was dedicated). The volumes were compiled from the diaries of Robinson and his fellow-travellers. Fifteen years later the second edition (our version) was published, with the original 3 vols edited down to 2 vols. There was also a stand-alone work, vol 3, to cover the authors 1852 journey and available separately to those who had already bought the 3 vols of the first edition. This set is unfortunately missing the second volume of the second edition (in other words, half of the original 1838 journeys), and our reserve has been adjusted accordingly, as we have decided to offer the remaining 2 vols on their own both because of the difficulty of obtaining the missing volume and because of the importance of Dr Robinson`s work. Vol 1. xxx + 614 pp of text + 18-fold map by Henri Kiepert of Berlin of Lower Egypt and the Peninsula of Sinai, with an inset of Mount Sinai. Vol 3. xxx + 664 pp of text + 10-fold map, also by Henri Kiepert, of Palestine, Phoenicia and Coelesyria, with an inset of Jerusalem. This binding of both volumes has been repaired in a way that preserves as much of the original marbled endpapers as possible. The original matching marbled paper-boards and leather corners are rubbed but still attractive. The contents are complete, with all page edges marbled to match the boards. The volumes have no owner of other markings and are not ex-library. However, as is usual with these volumes, the contents are foxed almost throughout, though nowhere does the foxing detract from the legibility and attractiveness of the text or the maps. The serious Bible history collector without all Robinson`s volumes may at least temporarily be pleased to have these two volumes. Further images - of the maps and otherwise - will be supplied on request to prospective bidder. [GOLD MEDAL FOR THE AUTHOR. In the `advertisement` for the new edition, Robinson writes: `The publication of the Biblical Researches was received with unexpected favour. In 1842, the Royal Geographical Society of London awarded to it their Patron`s Gold Medal.` There was much other praise as well and the volumes were `permitted to take rank as a standard work in relation to the Holy Land`. He soon found a series of more remunerative occupations and began saving for a prospecting trip and rambled all over the Rand trying to find out about geology and successful prospecting. He took part in the suppression of the Matabele uprising in 1899 and was prevented from prospecting by the Anglo-Boer War. Eventually, however, together with his friend Frank Lewis he traversed the untamed regions of Northern Rhodesia (now known as Zambia.
