Engraved frontispiece to vol. I, title vignettes, and 200 engraved and/or etched plates, most after Mazois, 16 hand-coloured or partly hand-coloured, 9 double-page or folding, vol. IV with additional double-page lithographic map and plate XLII is a lithograph, engraved head- and tailpieces. (Variable spotting and browning, particularly heavy to last two tissue guards in vol. IV, light dust-soiling to edges.) Original publisher's mottled paper covered boards, spines with red morocco gilt lettering-pieces, uncut (extremities rubbed, head- and tailcaps to vols I and II a little defective). 'THE FIRST PUBLICATION TO DISCUSS THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL REMAINS OF [POMPEI] IN FULL NEOCLASSICAL DETAIL' (RIBA). Compiled after three years' research, it was the intended start of a series on Paestum, Herculaneum, and Pozzuoli. (Lacking a total of 18 leaves and the map, that is: the preliminaries lack the general title and leaves A4, B1-4, C1-6, A2-3 present but detached and worn; 'Genealogies' lacks the map and C1-5; 'New Testament' lacks the last leaf Aa6; faint dampstain throughout, G1 in O.T. and T1 in N.T. with long tears, some leaves detached and creased these with some tears and small losses.) Contemporary blind-tooled calf (worn, dampstained, somewhat defective). Provenance: Alkin family (front endpaper inscribed by various owners c.17-19th century) SECOND FOLIO EDITION OF THE KING JAMES'S BIBLE, also known as the 'Great She Bible' for the more correct reading 'She went into the citie' in Ruth iii 15; and with the misprint in Matt xxvi 36, reading 'Judas' (here corrected 'Jesus' in manuscript). This Authorised Version, the work of over 40 translators divided into five committees based at Oxford, Cambridge and London, undoubtedly has had a greater influence on written and spoken English than any other book. Engraved twin-hemispherical world map, elaborate strapwork borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, all hand-coloured by a contemporary hand, Latin text below in four columns, the first with 20 lines, verso blank. (Trimmed just into the left- and right-hand extremities of the plate mark just touching the western hemisphere and associated strapwork, lightly browned, lower right-hand edge with very minor chips, some minor repairs to verso, very light vertical stain to both hemispheres, some very small repairs to compass rose with associated small losses), 286 x 519mm (sheet 382 x 519mm). VERY RARE SEPARATE ISSUE OF RUMOLD MERCATOR'S STRIKING WORLD MAP. Gerard Mercator's great world map of 1569 was condensed into this double-hemisphere map by his son, Rumold. The present lot conforms with Koeman's Me 12 as being separately issued - it was later added to third part of the Atlas in 1595. 'The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names' (Shirley). The North Pole is illustrated as a landmass surrounding a sea from which four rivers radiate, and there is a well depicted north west passage. A huge southern continent and the bulge in the south west coast of South America indicate the influence of Gerard Mercator. Koeman Me 12; Shirley 157. View on Christie's.com

The upper two maps contain from 75-620 west of Greenwich, 41-52 north, being Hudson Bay to Pennsylvania, with Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the lower three comprise 88-600 west, 40-29 north, showing Pennsylvania to Florida, and the coast of Carolina, the lower right being the cartouche. 'A Catalogue of the Maps in this Book' bound before title, title in red and black, hand-coloured engraved map of the world and 62 hand-coloured maps in the text. (Lacking Cc1-Cc4, map of 'Zanguebar' cut out and laid down, very light mainly marginal browning, a few spots or stains). Contemporary red calf, double gilt fillet on sides, central gilt panel with floral cornerpieces, spine lavishly decorated and lettered in gilt, inner dentelles, gilt edges (extremities rubbed, a few scuff marks on sides). FIRST EDITION, AN ATTRACTIVE COPY of Morden's celebrated atlas. A second edition was published in 1688, and further editions in 1693 and 1700. The book contains 15 maps of America including a general map of America (Burden's second state) showing California as an island. The small world map in two hemispheres appeared also in Patrick Gordon's Geography Anatomised (1693, 1699, 1700 and 1702 editions) and Modern's Atlas Terrestris (c.1700). SENEX, John (bap. 1678-1740). A Map of the World Corrected from the Observations Communicated to the Royal Societys [sic] of London and Paris. London: J. Senex, 1725 [but later]. Large engraved twin-hemispherical world map after Senex by Henry Hulsbergh (d. 1729) on four sheets, central cartouche with allegorical female figures representing the four continents, John Maxwell's name erased from cartouche but still visible, surrounding explanatory text on tides and winds derived from Issac Newton and Edmond Halley, California correctly depicted as a peninsula with erased island lines still visible, all hand-coloured by a contemporary hand, verso blank. (Old paper repairs to verso at sheet joins and vertical creases, repairs visible to recto at right-hand join, very faint soiling, trimmed at left-hand side to plate mark), 610 x 1095mm (sheet 635 x 1104mm). A FINE, VERY LARGE WORLD MAP, originally co-published by Senex and his then-partner John Maxwell in 1711, with both their names in the cartouche. It was re-issued in several later variants up until c.1750. Although the present example is dated 1725, the imprint adds 'F.R.S.' to Senex's name although he was not elected a Fellow of the Royal Society until 1728. RARE. View on Christie's.com

(Restored, margins and central crease fold strengthened on verso), 505 x 575mm (sheet 556 x 615mm). RARE WORLD MAP WITH ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLURING. Zürner's work is relatively unknown, appearing usually in other publishers' atlases, such as Schenk's Atlas Contractus. The present issue shows the routes of Magellan, Dampier, Tasman, Gaetani and Chaumont. California is tentatively depicted as an island with dotted lines, but coloured as a peninsula. Shirley 639.
