De Rota (Photographer): Two horizontal format (25 x 28cm) hardback volumes in dust jackets, plus a similar format paperback (Rankings 1911-1971 and Entry List 1926-1971), the three held in a sturdy slipcase, of the First Edition, 2003, of a major work celebrating the history of the Trieste-Opicina Motor Car Races and especially the photography of Adriano De Rota. A collection of documents and maps from the military career of Sergeant Charles Carthew, including his service in the Crimea and Constantinople between 1851 and 1859. Included among the documents and of special interest are letters from Queen Victoria's equerry granting the licence for Sgt Carthew to accept and wear the Insignia of the Order of the Medjidie Fifth Class (1861) and Fourth Class (1874). This military and knightly order from the Ottoman Empire was awarded by the Sultan for outstanding service to the State by foreign nationals. The maps in the collection are mounted on linen and of Azerbaeejaun (1808-1809), the Ottoman Dominions (c1850s) and a rare map of Turkey printed in Berlin (1844). Other documents in the collection include Sgt Carthew's Certificate of Discharge from the Fifth Battalion of Artillery then based at Woolwich (2 April, 1859), his character is described as 'exemplary'. The collection contains copies of the London Gazette (26 November 1861, 16 Jan 1874) and under the 'Whitehall Notices' it is documented when Sgt Carthew received his honours

James Baillie Fraser (1783-1856) was a Scottish traveller and artist, who, following the end of the war with Nepal in 1815 travelled with his brother William to the Himalayas, spending two months exploring the region. They became the first Europeans to reach the sources of the Jumna and Ganges rivers. Tutored by the artist George Chinnery, Fraser was encouraged by William Havell to publish his sketches upon his return to Calcutta. Fraser's account of his travels was separately published as 'Journal of a Tour through Part of the Snowy Range of the Himala Mountains, and to the Sources of the Rivers Jumna and Ganges', with a map in the same year. "It is interesting, also, that Rodwell and Martin take the pains to say that the work is uniform with the Daniell (1795-1807) and the Salt (1809), neither of which folios was published by them." Britannia: or a Geographical Description of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland with the Isles and Territories thereto belonging....., 2 parts in one volume, 1st edition, published Thomas Roycroft for the Undertaker, Richard Blome, 1673, title page with near contemporary ownership signature, front endpaper near detached, dedication to Charles II, preface and list of subcribers, 806 engraved coats of arms, folding engraved map of the British Isles, the British Isles, forty-eight uncoloured double page engraved maps including five folding (North Wales, South Wales, Scotland, Ireland and British Islands) and one single page map of London (complete as list), occasioanl slight creasing, book plate of Gloddaeth Library to front paste down, upper hinge cracked. near contemporary mottled calf with an elaborate gilt decorated spine with contrasting red gilt morocco label, a little worn at head and foot of spine, bumped and a little rubbed, folio William Nicholson, the Bishop of Carlise condemned Blome's Britannia 'as a most entire theft out of Camden and Speed'. As most cartographers borrowed from the works of earlier atlases this is somewhat harsh and certainly overlooks the fact that Blome's maps have a charming naivety which has never been replicated. Maps are good dark impressions with large margins. (2)
