(Part 1: tear to outer margin of title page, large clean tear to plate facing p.253, some spotting; part 2: lacking the frontispiece portrait, the plate facing p.194, and the plate facing p.304, some light spotting, heavier to a few plates). Contemporary calf (vol. I: rebacked with original spine laid down), or recent green half-morocco (vol. II, parts 1 & 2). Note: first edition of vol. I, and vol. II, part 2, second edition of vol. (Light creasing to the folding plate, slight offsetting to the map). Contemporary diced calf (rebacked, modern endpapers). Note: Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) is now known for pioneering the scientific study of dinosaurs. The present work remains one of his best known and may be considered an important early milestone in the study of modern geology and palaeontology. Provenance: The Library Collection of the Late W. (Lacking plate III, frontispiece cut down and re-inserted, title, half-title and frontispiece spotted, some spotting to plates, creasing to the folding plates, plates XXI and XXII with tears to outer margins.) Original drab paper-covered boards, letterpress title and advertisement to the upper and lower boards (rebacked in cloth at an early date, the original spine label laid down, scuffed, some discolouration to spine, extremities bumped). Note: although the title calls for `fifty engravings` the maximum found seems to be no more than 48 (i.e. frontispiece, title, folding plan, folding map & 44 plates).
