Folding hand-coloured engraved map (350 x 440mm), in 15 sections and backed onto cloth, with `Places of the Meeting of Foxhounds` marked. Folded within original red cloth covers, titled in gilt on upper cover, retailer`s label on inside upper cover `Ackermann / 191 / Regent Street`. - And three other similar maps (4). (Volume II with text browned throughout, the leaves on either side of the inserted cuttings also browned, the plate facing p.123 in vol. II shaved into the image area.) Vol. I (bound in 1 vol.): general title and dedication printed in red and black, 3 folding letterpress genealogical tables, 27 plates, plans and maps (comprising: 1 double-page hand-coloured map, 2 hand-coloured plans [1 double-page], 24 uncoloured plates and plans [1 double-page]). (Some light spotting, heavier to a few plates.); Vol. II (bound in 2 vols.): uncut, titles in red and black, 2pp. list of subscribers, 2 letterpress genealogical tables, 51 only (of 54) plates, plans and maps (including 1 double-page map, 2 folding hand-coloured map, 1 single-page hand-coloured map, 2 double-page uncoloured plans, 1 double-page hand-coloured plate, 1 single-page hand-coloured plate), numerous illustrations, many hand-coloured, extra-illustrated with a duplicate of the plate bound between pp.360 and 361 in part 1, 2 copies of a mounted lithographic portrait of Cartwright, a rare aquatint image of the Sydney Oak at Penshurst and 5 further plates. (Part 1: tear to outer margin of title page, large clean tear to plate facing p.253, some spotting; part 2: lacking the frontispiece portrait, the plate facing p.194, and the plate facing p.304, some light spotting, heavier to a few plates). Contemporary calf (vol. I: rebacked with original spine laid down), or recent green half-morocco (vol. II, parts 1 & 2). Note: first edition of vol. I, and vol. II, part 2, second edition of vol. II, part 1. Vol. I and vol. II, part 1 were published in 1815 and 1819 respectively by James Dallaway, but are scarce due to a fire at the printer`s premises which destroyed the majority of the copies (3). Half-title, lithographic frontispiece, 5 lithographic plates (1 folding), 1 folding hand-coloured engraved map, wood-engraved title vignette and illustrations. (Light creasing to the folding plate, slight offsetting to the map). Contemporary diced calf (rebacked, modern endpapers). Note: Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) is now known for pioneering the scientific study of dinosaurs. The present work remains one of his best known and may be considered an important early milestone in the study of modern geology and palaeontology. Provenance: The Library Collection of the Late W. Uncut, 4pp. list of subscribers, 41 plates and maps only (of 42), comprising 1 hand-coloured lithographed geological map, 40 aquatints (2 folding), extra-illustrated with 3 loosely-inserted small format original drawings of fossils, one on paper with watermark date `1834`. (Lacking plate III, frontispiece cut down and re-inserted, title, half-title and frontispiece spotted, some spotting to plates, creasing to the folding plates, plates XXI and XXII with tears to outer margins.) Modern cloth. Provenance: Lilian Houghton (signature); Leslie Beaconsfield Bristow (armorial bookplate). Note: "...Mantell`s first and in some respects most important book" (Dean). Dean 40. Engraved frontispiece, additional title, 1 folding plan, 1 folding map, and 43 plates (?only, of a possible 44). (Possibly lacking one plate, some spotting.) Original drab paper-covered boards, letterpress title and advertisement to the upper and lower boards (rebacked in cloth at an early date, the original spine label laid down, scuffed, some discolouration to spine, extremities bumped). Note: although the title calls for `fifty engravings` the maximum found seems to be no more than 48 (i.e. frontispiece, title, folding plan, folding map & 44 plates).
