Le Royaume d`Angleterre Distingue en Ses Provinces . This is the first state of this handsome map of England and Wales. It also includes a small portion of Ireland`s eastern coast, southern Scotland, the Channel Islands, and a stretch of French coastline. England and Wales are divided into counties, and several towns, cities, rivers, and topographical details are shown. The stunning decorative title cartouche features the United Kingdom coat-of-arms with a banner underneath reading Je Maintiendray (""I will maintain,"" which is strangely enough the motto of the Netherlands), along with trumpeting angels, mermen, and symbols of military might. A second cartouche flanked by putti encloses the six distance scales. A compass rose capped with a fleur-de-lis appears in the Irish Sea. Jaillot, in partnership with the sons of Nicolas Sanson, re-engraved Sanson`s map on a larger scale in the 1680s. This particular map was published 20 years later, and while based on Sanson`s cartography (who is credited in the cartouche), it is a Jaillot composition. There is an alternate title running along the top neatline: Le Royaume d`Angleterre, Distingue en Ses Provinces; Scavoir en Northumberland, Mercie, East-Angles, Essex, Kent, Sussex, West-Sex, et la Principaute de Galles. It is densely filled with information on cities, towns, villages, churches, roads and canals. The prominent title cartouche combines symbolic and everyday figures in a display of life in Georgian times with scenes illustrating the sciences, trade and industry, agriculture and maritime activity throughout the realm. Geography Books) #13-16. This boldly engraved map centers on England and Wales. It shows counties, towns and cities, rivers, mountains, nearby islands, and Hadrian`s Wall. It extends to parts of Ireland, Scotland, France, and the Low Countries. A compass rose and decorative title cartouche adorn the top right corner. Engraved by George Rollos. Condition: A strong impression with slight toning along the sheet`s edges, well away from image. (A)C. Britannia Antiqua, by Sidney Hall, circa 1825 (7.1 x 9.4""). This fascinating historical map presents Roman Britain split into four provinces: Maxima Caesariensis, Britannia Secunda, Flavia Caesariensis, and Britannia Prima. Large and magnificent four sheet map filled with remarkable details down to the smallest village. The map shows hundreds of roads with distance information between towns. The legend identifies numerous physical features through icons for towns and villages by size, local markets, astronomical observation sites, and more. The large title cartouche with fancy lettering depicts Britannia holding a staff with the liberty cap, Athena, Hermes, an angel with a harp and a book of Shakespeare, a lion with a trident, surveying instruments, a globe, etc. The seas are embellished with numerous sailing ships and a fine compass rose. The imprint of Robert Sayer Map & Printseller at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street appears below the neatline at bottom. As issued with two sheets joined to form a two-part map. When top and bottom are joined, the map will measure approximately 39 x 46"". A nice impression with attractive color and minor soiling. There are a few short fold separations and edge tears that enter about 1"" to 2"" into map that have been closed on verso with archival material. [On 2 Sheets] Scotiae Regnum . The cartography of this beautiful pair of maps of Scotland shows the influence of an earlier map by Nicolas de Nicolay. Mercator`s depiction of Cape Wrayght or Faro Head was to influence maps of Scotland for almost two centuries. The Hebrides and Orkney Islands are also superbly delineated. The maps are richly engraved with a moire pattern in the seas and strong topographical features in the interior. The northern map is decorated with Mercator`s trademark metalwork cartouche, while the southern section is untitled and decorated with a single sailing ship. A matched pair, with Latin text on verso. Size varies slightly. Nice impressions with attractive color and original margins. This steel-engraved map of Scotland shows counties, notable towns and cities, railroads, canals, and common roads. Several mountains are named along with their elevations, and historical battlefields are located with crossed swords and the date of the battle. An inset at top right depicts the Orkney Isles, and another at bottom left focuses on the Shetland Isles. Surrounded by a decorative scroll border. Condition: A few faint, unobtrusive spots.B. Scotland, by John Rapkin, circa 1860 (9.9 x 13.9""). This impressive map of Scotland features excellent detail of the counties, towns and cities, and topography. An inset in the upper right corner zeroes in on the Shetland Islands. Enclosed in an elegant border. This is a later edition of the similar Tallis map, with updates and no vignettes, published by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Condition: Issued folding with a binding trim at upper right that has been replaced with old paper and an associated binding tear just touching the border that has been closed with archival materials. The Environs of Edinburgh, by SDUK Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, dated 1838 (15.8 x 12.3""). This detailed steel engraved plan shows the city of Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside about 10 miles in each direction. Roads, railroads, and various places of interest including castles, churches, manses, mills, and an asylum are located. Sites of battles are marked with crossed swords and the year when they occurred. Features a keyboard style border. Engraved by B.R. Davies. Condition: A few faint spots with light toning and a few edge tears confined to the blank margins. B. A New Map of Berwick Shire. From the Best Authorities, by Thomas Kitchin, from London Magazine, published 1772 (8.6 x 6.8""). This lovely small map centers on the historic county of Berwickshire within the Scottish Borders. Towns and cities, roads, and topographical detail are shown. The date July 22, 1333, appears next to Hollydown Hill, commemorating the Battle of Halidon Hill during the Second War of Scottish Independence. A compass rose and decorative cartouche are also included. Ref: Jolly #LOND-294. Condition: A dark impression issued folding on a lightly toned sheet with faint offsetting and a few fold separations that have been closed on verso with tape. [Lot of 2] Ireland [and] Ireland . A. Ireland, by Henry Schenck Tanner, from Tanner`s Universal Atlas, circa 1836 (8.9 x 11.2""). This handsome map of Ireland shows the nation divided into counties. Roads, canals, and railroads are identified in addition to the many towns and cities, rivers, and lakes shown. There is excellent detail along the coastline as well, with bays, harbors, ports, and islands noted. A lighthouse appears near Dublin. Condition: Minor soiling, otherwise fine. (A)B. Ireland, by John Rapkin, circa 1860 (9.4 x 13.4""). This intricately detailed map of Ireland emphasizes the four provinces of Ulster, Connacht (here spelled Connaught), Leinster, and Munster. It also features excellent coastal and topographical detail and locates counties, towns and cities, and railroads. A couple submarine telegraph lines can be found around Belfast Lough and Dublin Bay. These lines were first installed in 1853 and allowed Ireland to transmit telegrams across the Irish Sea to Great Britain. The beautifully engraved border is comprised of shamrocks, with a harp entwined in shamrocks at the bottom. This is a later edition of the similar Tallis map, with updates and no vignettes, published by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Condition: Issued folding with a 2"" tear in an unengraved area at right that has been closed on verso with archival tape. This map focuses on Northern Germany and covers the area from the French border to Konigsburg (Kaliningrad), thus including part of today`s Poland. The bottom is composed of four detail plans: the Frederick William Canal in Brandenburg, the principality of Orange, the principality of Neuchatel and Vallangin, and the vicinity of Berlin. This masterfully engraved map of Scandinavia extends to the east to include portions of Russia, the Baltic states, and the northern part of Germany and Poland. Political divisions are delineated, and numerous towns and cities are located. A decorative title cartouche featuring Ulrika Eleonora, Queen of Sweden, and an Edenic scene adorns the top left corner. A crisp impression with a few faint spots. There are light damp stains along the upper edge of the sheet confined to the blank margin and some marginal soiling. 22.9"" W x 19.3"" H . Norwegen und Schweden . This uncommon German map of Scandinavia was engraved by Karl Jaettnig. It is dense with detail, depicting towns and cities, political divisions, and plenty of topographical detail. A key within the title cartouche identifies numerous other locations of interest, including universities, castles, locations of land and sea battles (with the date when they occurred), and various types of mines. There are two insets that focus on Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Issued folding on watermarked paper with some light offsetting from an opposing page of text at top right and faint scattered foxing, mostly concentrated in the top right blank margin. Ducatus Uplandia . A decorative map of the area around Stockholm with well-engraved detail of the interconnected waterways from the Baltic through to Lake Malaren and its tributaries. The map is embellished with a number of coats of arms with the heraldry for Uppsala being the most prominent. The map is dedicated to Jacob de la Gardie in the lower left, while farmers and allegorical figures flank the title cartouche on the right. This is the second state with French text on verso. Attractive original color on a sheet with wide margins and a large elephant watermark. Episcopatus Bergensis . This superb map covers the area around Bergen with graphic topographical detail. It extends to include the mountain plateau that is now the Hardangervidda National Park. It is richly embellished with title and distance scale cartouches surrounded by putti, and sailing ships in the sea. Magni Ducatus Finlandiae Russiae Partim, Partim Sueciae Subjecti; Sinus Item Bothnici ac Finnici Nova et Accurata Delineatio Calamo et Sumtibus . This superb map covers the lower half of Finland, where the nation touches the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland. It includes part of western Sweden, the northern coast of present-day Estonia, and a portion of Russia. There is excellent detail of the mountainous terrain and the network of waterways, and many towns and cities are identified. The elegant title cartouche features the greater coat of arms of Sweden, Neptune with his trident, Fortuna with her scale, and other allegorical figures. This state features Lotter`s imprint. Livonia . Beautiful map of present-day Estonia, Latvia and part of Lithuania. Fully engraved to illustrate the forests, cities and villages and embellished with a strapwork title cartouche and a scale of miles. On a full sheet of English text measuring 8.8 x 13.1"".At the beginning of the 17th century, Samuel Purchas, an English cleric, set out to publish a compendium of voyages to foreign countries. To illustrate his work, Purchase obtained the rights to use Jodocus Hondius` copperplates from Atlas Minor. Over 60 maps were included in Purchas His Pilgrimes, most of which were from Hondius` plates, with English titles inserted above them. Purchas also had a few additional maps engraved, including those for India, China, Greenland, North America, and Nova Scotia. A Chart of a Part of the Gulf of Finland from Island Dago to Stoneskar & with the Light Houses Marked... This large, uncommon chart of a stretch of Estonian coastline is by Leontiy Spafaryev (often spelled in English as ""Spafarief"" or ""Spafarieff""), cartographer of the Russian Admiralty. It extends from the northern part of the island of Hiiumaa (Dago) to east of Eru Bay. Small islands, soundings, hazards, anchorages, and other navigational details are included. Several lighthouses are identified in the middle of semicircles that show their range, and the Catherendal Lighthouse is shown in plan form. This unusual emphasis on lighthouses is unsurprising given that Spafaryev organized the system of lighthouses as the head of the Lighthouse Administration. Much of the map`s information is offered in English and Russian, including the title. On watermarked paper (dated 1813) with moderate offsetting and minor soiling especially concentrated around the corners of the sheet. The bluish line that appears in the image is caused by the scanner and not on the actual map. 36.5"" W x 23"" H . . 1817

Dania Regnum . This is a large, attractive map of Denmark and southern Sweden with good detail throughout. Skaneland, the historical region at the southern tip of the Scandinavian peninsula, is part of Denmark here, as the map was not updated to reflect the region`s return to Sweden after the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde. The map is adorned with five sailing ships and a title cartouche featuring the Danish coat of arms supported by the traditional woodwoses. French text on verso, published between 1643-50. A nice impression with original color that has been partially refreshed. There are faint damp stains that just enter map border at bottom, and an archivally repaired centerfold separation in top blank margin. 20.6"" W x 16.8"" H . Blaeu, (Family) . 1643

Le Royaume de Danemark Subdivise en Ses Principales Provinces Tire de Plusieurs Memoires . This bold map of Denmark and southern Sweden is engraved to show political divisions, rivers, marshes, shoals, forests, and towns. The northern parts of the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland appear as well. The decorative title cartouche features Diana, goddess of the hunt, with a quiver of arrows and animals running around her. Another cartouche encloses five distance scales. There is an alternate title running across the neatline at top: Le Royaume de Danemark, ou sont les Isles de Seelande et de Fyonie, le Duche de Sleswick, et les Dioeceses de Rypen, Aarhus, Alborg, Wiborg, dans la Presquisle de Iutlande.... Printed on two sheets that have been joined. A nice impression and original outline color. Nearly the entire sheet has been damp stained, but the paper quality remains durable. This decorative map of Denmark divides the country into dioceses, extending south to include Hamburg. There is good detail of towns, roads, rivers and topography. A lovely title cartouche fills the interior of Sweden, featuring a pastoral scene and a dedication to Lord Balhaven. Engraved by Herman Moll. A fine impression on watermarked paper with original outline coloring and later color in the cartouche. There is minor soiling, archivally repaired centerfold separations at top and bottom, and a tear that just enters map border at bottom that has also been archivally repaired. 21.8"" W x 19.2"" H . Beautiful map of East Frisia and its important shipping center of Emden and the Watten Islands, from the cartography of Ubbo Emmius, a local cartographer and historian (1547-1625). An inset shows the region inundated by the great flood on Christmas Day, 1277. Finely adorned with cartouches, animals, Neptune, ships, surveyors, a compass rose and two elaborate coats of arms. French text on verso. Original color on watermarked paper with one short centerfold separation confined to the bottom blank margin and a remnant of cello tape on verso, well away from the map image. 19.5"" W x 15"" H . Hollandiae Septentrionalis & Frisiae Occidentalis Accuratissima Delineatio . This attractive map depicts Amsterdam and the area directly to the north of the great city, extending to Den Helder. The tiny street patterns of the major cities are shown along with good detail of the surrounding provinces. At bottom right is an inset of the Wadden Islands from Texel to the tip of Ameland. The map is adorned with an allegorical title cartouche featuring Mercury, a satyr, and a river god. Lovely original color that has been partially refreshed, with light soiling and two small holes in unengraved areas that have been professionally repaired. Paskaarte van de Zuyder Zee, met Alle des Zelfs Inkomende Gaaten... This is an early edition of van Keulen`s magnificent chart of the Ijsselmeer and the Wadden Islands. The waters are filled with soundings, sandbars, and navigational notes. The chart also shows the key rivers and towns on land, with the larger cities depicted with miniature bird`s-eye plans. Two lovely compass roses orient north to the right, and Amsterdam is located at bottom right of the chart. The map is handsomely embellished with ships and two lovely cartouches. The title cartouche features Europa, Mercury, and a lion to symbolize the Dutch Republic; the second cartouche displays van Keulen`s imprint and is surrounded by putti and the coat of arms of Amsterdam. A fine, dark impression with lovely color. Remargined at top with a portion of the border expertly replaced in facsimile, and chips in right and left blank margins have also been professionally repaired, with a small amount of image in facsimile. 22.5"" W x 20.1"" H . Flandriae Comitatus in Ejusdem Subjacentes Ditiones Accuratissime Divisus una cum Adjacentibus . This map of the historical region of Flanders traces the coastline from Grevelingen to Zeeland at de Hont oste Westerschelde, south to below Douay, and east to Brussels. Beautifully engraved and highly detailed, the map shows political divisions, forests, roads, canals, hundreds of tiny villages, and several fortified towns including Brussels and Antwerp. A purely decorative cartouche appears at bottom left, featuring a Belgian lion coat-of-arms and allegorical figures. A nice impression with original color. There is a centerfold separation that enters 0.5"" into the image at bottom that has been closed on verso with tape and an extraneous crease parallel to the centerfold. The routes leave Paris in a spider-like pattern with eight spokes and extend throughout the county as far south as Nice. With three decorative cartouches including the title, imprint, and a distance scale. The dedication portion of the decorative title cartouche is blank. Further embellished with the royal coat of arms at upper right and three ships under full sail at left. Tavernier`s imprint states ""Avec Privillege du Roy."" Postal routes appear along with provinces, numerous towns and cities, mountains, lakes, and rivers. The distances between posts are indicated. The map extends to include the English Channel and parts of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Corsica. A nice impression on sturdy watermarked paper with original color, a 7.5"" centerfold separation at bottom that has been closed on verso with linen and some minor toning, mostly concentrated along the centerfold. Plan de Grenoble . This superb manuscript map provides an excellent bird`s-eye plan of the city of Grenoble, located at the foot of the French Alps in southeastern France. The plan locates 94 key sites, with a numbered key at right and left. Numerous famous locations are identified, including the church of St. Laurent, the palace at the Place Saint Andre, the Jardin de Ville, and Place Grenette. The Isere River divides the city from the ancient fortifications of the Bastille, located on the mountain-side to the north of Grenoble. The artistry of both the drawing and coloring of this map are extraordinary. The artist`s signature is at bottom right, and appears to be ""Girand.""The paper bears the watermark: ""Fin de M [fleur-de-lis] Iohannot d`Annonay 1749."" The paper was made by the Johannot family, who manufactured paper in Annonay, just 100 kilometers west of Grenoble. On hand-laid paper with the watermark of ""Fin de M [fleur-de-lis] Iohannot d`Annonay 1749."" There is moderate soiling, and several short edge tears have been archivally repaired. An early example of this large, handsome map of the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal, Spain and the Balearic Islands. Exceptionally detailed, the map is divided into principalities and royal regions. The map is adorned with two lovely, baroque cartouches; the mileage scale is topped with an armorial shield and the title cartouche is surrounded in a vine motif with a lion on top and a horse on the bottom. Titled in Latin above: ""Nova Regni Hispaniae Accurata Descriptio, ad usum Serenissimi Burgundiae Ducis."" . Watermarked paper with bold original color in the map and later coloring in the cartouches. There is light soiling, a few small abrasions along the centerfold, and an archivally repaired centerfold separation at bottom. It is based on the manuscript map by Jon Bloemmaerts or Johannes Florianus and depicts the important shipping center of Emden and the Watten Islands, An inset shows the region inundated by the great flood on Christmas Day, 1277, surrounded by an elaborate strapwork cartouche. The map is finely engraved with a stippled sea and a distance scale surmounted by male and female figures displaying the costumes of the region. Latin text on verso. Osnabrugensis Episcopatus. Auctore Ioanne Gigante . This handsome map of the German province of Hanover was drawn by Joannes Gigas (Gigante) for Jodocus Hondius shortly before his death. This plate was among the 39 Hondius copper plates that were purchased by Willem Blaeu in 1629. He replaced Hondius` imprint with his own and published them as part of his first atlas. It is centered on Osnabruck at center and the large strapwork title cartouche incorporates a fine view of the city with its many steeples dominating the sky-line, attended by a finely attired surveyor. At lower right is an inset of Reckenberg. Further embellished with a coat of arms, small provincial armorials and a smaller cartouche. French text on verso. A large decorative allegoric title cartouche fills the lower right corner, featuring river gods to represent the rivers in the region. The copper plates are closely copied from those of Philip Galle`s 1593 Italian edition. On a full sheet of Italian text measuring 5.4 x 7.6"". This region had been variously annexed by Sweden and Prussia over the years and is today primarily in Poland with a portion controlled by Germany. The map is based on the surveys of Eilhard Lubbin and engraved by S. Rogiers. Two decorative cartouches, an elaborate coat of arms, two compass roses and sailing ships decorate this map. Moraviae Nova et Post Omnes Priores Accuratissima Delineatio. Auctore I.A. Comenio . Handsome map of Moravia based on the work of Johan Amos Comenius (1592-1670), a Czech educator and bishop. The map is filled with detail of the cities, rivers, mountains and forests and is adorned with four cartouches filling each of the corners. Above the map are lovely views of four cities: Polna, Olmuts (Olomouc), Brin (Brno) and Znaim (Znojmo). Visscher`s Latinized name, Nicolao Johannide Piscatore, appears below the legend. Engraved by Abraham Goos, although his imprint does not appear on the map. This is the fourth of seven states, first published in 1627. Excellent impression and color with numerous chips in blank margins that have been professionally repaired. The region is known as Graubunden, which was once part of a Roman province called Raetia. The map highlights the fortifications along the Adda River, as well as provides excellent information on the topography, cities and tiny villages throughout the region. Each corner of the map is adorned with a decorative cartouche.
