He was professor in St. Petersburg and directly instructed by Tsar Catherina II. an expedition through Russia. He was accompanied by important colleagues (as listed above). The impressive atlas volumes is showing numerous indigenious tribes and people of Russia, impressive plants and animals and important and rare maps (there under the Volga-Germans) as well as Monuments. - Instead of the original "Carte générale de l'empire de Russie" there is the outline coloured map "Russie d'Europe Partie Méridionale" by Delamarche present. The pages mostly well presvered and only sometimes with stains or slight browning, 2 plates with small repaired defects (old backed). - The text volumes with gilded edges. - Altogether well presevered copies in decorative contemporary bindings.

Zt. mit Marmordeckeln und goldgepr. DSchild (berieben und bestoßen, Gelenk angeplatzt). Seltener Atlasband. Ohne die beiden Textbände. - Gay 2681. Brunet IV, 1462. - Das Werk wurde auf eigene Kosten des Autors gedruckt, daher ist die Auflage sehr gering. Der Atlas erschien ohne Titelblatt und ist so vollständig. - Eduard Rüppell (1794-1884) war nach Bruce der erste Europäer, der von 1831-34 ins Innere Abessiniens, dem ehemaligen Kaiserreich auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Äthiopien und Eritrea, vordrang. Die Tafeln zeigen neben einer großen Karte vor allem Ansichten, traditionelle Kostüme und Ruineninschriften. - Durchgehend stockfleckig und etwas wasserrandig sowie teils mit kl. Anschmutzungen. Eine Tafel mit Einriss im unteren weißen Rand. Africa - Atlas volume. With 10 lithographed plates. Oblong folio. Contemporary half leather with marbled boards and gilt cover label (rubbed and bumped, joint chipped). - Rare atlas volume. Without the two text volumes. - Gay 2681. Brunet IV, 1462. - The work was printed at the author's own expense, so the edition is very small. The atlas appeared without a title page and is thus complete. - Eduard Rüppell (1794-1884) was the first European after Bruce to penetrate the interior of Abyssinia, the former empire on the territory of present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea, from 1831-34. In addition to a large map, the plates show mainly views, traditional costumes, and inscriptions on ruins. - Throughout foxing and somewhat waterstained and partly with small soiling. One plate with tear in the lower white margin.

Nebehay/Wagner III, 648. - Der österreichische Topograf und Geograph Adolf Schmidl (1802-1863) gilt als Begründer der Speläologie (Höhlenforschung). In der Karstlandschaft des heutigen Slowenien, in der sich auch die hier behandelten Adelsberger Grotten befinden, beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit den dortigen Höhlen. Die Tafeln zeigen neben einer Karte des Gebiets u.a. Ansichten der gothischen Halle in der Erzherzog-Johanns-Grotte, einen Plan der Lueger Höhlen und der Planina Höhle, den Eingang der Adelsberger Grotte und eine Tafel mit der örtlichen Insekten-Fauna. - Textband teils noch unaufgeschnitten und vereinzelt minimal stockfleckig. Tafelband durchgehend stockfleckig und mit geglättetem vertikalen Falz, Titelbl. hinterlegt und mit kl. Läsuren. Orig. wrappers and cont. black half cloth with gilt title (somewhat rubbed and bumped). - First edition, rare. - The Austrian topographer and geographer Adolf Schmidl (1802-1863) is considered the founder of speleology. In the karst landscape of today's Slovenia, where the Adelsberg caves are also located, he intensively studied the local caves. The plates show a map of the area, views of the gothic hall in the Archduke Johanns Grotto, a plan of the Lueger Caves and the Planina Cave, the entrance of the Adelsberg Grotto and a plate with the local insect fauna. - Text volume partly still uncut and sporadically minimally foxed. The volume of plates foxed throughout and with smoothed vertical fold, title page backed and with small tears.
