In 1893, he moved to Kyoto and studied yoga and nihonga styles of painting and watercolors. It came only in middle age he started collaborating with the shin-hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. Despite his late debut as a shin-hanga printmaker, he successfully put himself on the map as the greatest artist of the shin-hanga style and is especially noted for his excellent landscape prints. His prints are highly recognized in both Japan and overseas.Height: 11 in x width: 15 3/4 in.Condition:The colors are bold and bright. There are no tears, creases, or restorations. There is some light wear along the edges. There are two pin holes along the upper corners. The work is not framed.

The company created over 7000 popular lithographs depicting American life until 1907.Sheet; height: 16 in x width: 11 in.Condition:The sheet is toned. There is some soiling along the edges. Some light areas of foxing. Soiling to the verso. Pencil inscription "XO -" along the verso. Two areas of light skimming, likely from a previous framing, along the upper left and right corners along the verso. No evidence of restoration when viewed under UV light. The work is not framed.

Kunike (Adolf Friedrich) Zwey hundert und sechzig Donau-Ansichten nach dem Laufe des Donaustromes von seinem Ursprunge bis zu seinem Ausflusse in das schwarze Meer, forward by Dr. Georg Rump, 264 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates, light damp-staining, occasional foxing and very light toning, creasing to letterpress leaves, ink inscription to foot of title, linen-backed map of the Danube loosely inserted, 20th century boards with 19th century spine, spine rubbed, [Bobins 1445], oblong folio, Vienna, Leopold Grund, 1826. *** A complete set of this superb sequence of lithographs by Kunike following the course of the Danube from its source to the Black Sea.  The commission for producing the original drawings on which Kunike based his lithographs was initially undertaken by Rudolf Alt until his fear at the dangers inherent in the later reaches of the Danube as it entered the Ottoman Empire caused him to resign at the mid-point, leaving Ludwig Erminy to complete the sequence. We can trace no other complete hand-coloured set appearing at auction.

Island Stories. Shanghai 1905. 'Extracts From The Papers of Mr John Westwood, Mariner of London and Shanghai, with Original illustrations From Descriptions Supplied By The Author', 'Shanghai: Printed At The North-China Herald Office 1905' and a 'Map & Guide of Peking, Japan Tourist Bureau, Tokyo' and items of ephemera with some relating to William Leach. Provenance: From the estate of William Arthur Blackburn Leach.DOB: 2nd Jan 1872.Leach was born in Norwich where he attended a local grammar school, later becoming an apprentice carpenter and engineer. In 1902 after he had qualified, he went to China where he obtained a position in the Public Works Department of the Shanghai Municipal Council. He spent his working life in Shanghai until he left in 1926.During his time in China he held interests in a Christian Mission school and helped to support street children.He seized every opportunity to visit other parts of China and took thousands of photographs. He purchased widely on his travels, particularly woodcarvings, bronzes, traditional kimonos, paintings and porcelain. He treasured silver items and bought much to take home. He travelled home at least four times during his stay in China and these return visits were round-the-world trips in which he travelled through and visited Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Egypt and The Holy Land, the Far East, Canada and USA.On his return to the UK he lived in Northampton where he was a lay preacher and a local councillor. He gave a great many talks on his experiences in China and the many other Countries he had visited.He died in 1962. Very good internaly, slight ware to binding but very good general condition, light spotting, 154 pages runs true, plates complete as called for.  Map of Peking 39 x 54, very good condition, folds out.

The most obvious area of repair/disrepair is around the bottom edge of Southern Ireland and also towards the East coast, Essex area. Dark discolouration coming in from the left hand side - as can be seen in the image. The top edge of frame with some old worm, and related loss to the top left corner. The sampler: discolouration and fading there too, with a diagonal line of dark discolouration to the bottom right with other smaller patches. see extra images.
