Ephemera – Canals – The Ellesmere Canal A sketch of the country through which it is intended to make a Navigable Canal from Shrewsbury to Chester & Liverpool to unite the Rivers Severn Dee & Mersey according to the plan determined on at the meeting at Ellesmere 15th September 1791. A fine map printed on a single leaf of paper approx 17x8 ins. Printed plan but with many ms insertions mainly coloured lines showing the proposed different routes for the canal with a further line indicating a coal branch into Wales. Ms notes to top and bottom. Old folds but otherwise unblemished. A fascinating map. The eventual line of the canal incorporated most of the western line though the canal which exists today runs from Wolverhampton passing to the east of Shrewsbury and thus avoiding the River Severn
Ephemera – Canals printed prospectus putting forward the case for the Grand Western Canal to be built between Bridgewater and Taunton dated 1823 incorporating a fine miniature map showing the line of the proposed canal. The canal is currently being restored for leisure use. It was proposed to provide a water link between the Bristol Channel and the English Channel. Printed on 4pp folio a little creased but otherwise unblemished.
WWI – Board Game Unsere U-Boote a German board game dating from 1916 the object of which was to attack Britain with u-boats. The game appears virtually complete with playing board featuring a map of the UK and Ireland with four illustrations of U-Boat activity. Some playing pieces may be missing but it appears that they the substantial majority of the pieces are still present including die cast ‘U-Boats’ and Union Flags(presumably the targets for the U-Boats). Full playing instructions (in German) are included printed on the under side of the box lid. The game is contained in its original box with illustrated cover and is in remarkably good condition. Excessively rare.
Ephemera – Shropshire the programme for the charity premier of the film ‘Gone to Earth’ at the Granada Shrewsbury on October 15th 1950 featuring scenes from the film and also scenes showing the preparation for the film in Much Wenlock together with a map of the part of Shropshire made famous by Mary Webb together with a promotional item advertising ‘Stretton’ ginger ale manufactured by Jewsbury & Brown of Manchester
WWII – poster remarkable British issue poster approx 20x15ins clearly issued just before the outbreak of war showing a map of Europe under the title ‘Nazi War Aims revealed by Secret Nazi Map – circulated in 1937’. On the map each country is marked with an indication as to when they will be part of Germany. The chronology was a little out of kilter with the actual events - France Belgium and Holland for example were planned to be part of the Third Reich by 1941 while Britain was to ‘be German before 1948’ – clearly Hitler was in a rush.
