Original vintage poster - Illustrated Map of the Holy Land for Use in Schools Issued by the National Savings Movement, this poster has been designed for use in schools and shows many of the historic towns in the Holy Land. The illustrations have been based on events from the Old and New Testaments and have been placed, where possible, in geographical position, except where a number of important events have taken place in a small area. It is interesting to record that some of the illustrations of the towns have been adapted from engravings in Cassell, Petter and Galpin’s illustrated Bible published over a century ago. – The map features Mediterranean Sea or The Great Sea, The Dead Sea, modern Israel and Palestine territories and the Eastern Bank of the Jordan River. An early, Pre-A Speedster on a set of Rudge knock-off alloys, one of the most collectable Porsches of all time.Porsche’s remarkable 356 put the Zuffenhausen Company firmly on the automotive map in the 1950s, with Dr Ferdinand’s original design - a somewhat basic sports car closely based on Volkswagen’s Beetle - evolving into a technically advanced, beautifully resolved machine over a production life spanning more than 15 years. The earliest 356s were powered by a Volkswagen-derived flat-four displacing 1068cc and rated at 40hp, but the 1300cc engine became an option from 1951 onwards. In 1952, the body was refined with a one-piece windscreen (bent in the middle) and revised bumpers, while a new 1488cc engine became available with a roller-bearing crankshaft, twin Solex carburettors and a handy 60bhp on tap. Other improvements included duplex front brakes, a rear parcel shelf and revised instrumentation (the tacho became standard). Stronger brakes, full synchromesh gearboxes across the range and a new two-spoke steering wheel appeared in 1953 and two new 1500cc engines were introduced, the 55bhp standard unit and the 70bhp 'Super'. Sold in Coupé, Cabriolet and Speedster variants, the so-called ‘Pre-A’ 356 is highly prized amongst collectors for its rarity and purity of design. Built at the instigation of Porsche’s North American distributor, Max Hoffman, the original Speedster was a stripped down, open-topped version of the 356 and became very successful in North America as a dual-purpose sports car, proving popular with amateur racing drivers competing in SCCA events. Porsche built approximately 920 Pre-A Speedsters before adopting the new Type 616/1 and 616/2 engines in October 1955 and a total of 1,234 Pre-A cars were made prior to the official introduction of the 356A in January 1956. The left-hand drive Speedster we have on offer here is an early one, indeed it’s the 347th car produced and the accompanying Kardex card confirms that it was completed on 3rd March 1955 prior to being delivered to Hoffman’s in New York City.Little is known about the car's early history although it has been enjoyed by its current owner for more than 20 years in Monaco. Recently, it's been looked after by award-winning Porsche restorers, Sportwagen in Southend as well as JAZ Porsche and recent attention includes a minor service with the relevant documentation on file.Sitting on a set of the desirable and valuable Rudge knock-off alloy wheels, the 356 is now attractively finished in Dunkelblau with a grey leatherette interior. The original colour was Signal Red according to the Kardex and additionally the Speedster now also boasts a more powerful 1600 cc engine.Overall, this is a car to use and enjoy, it's one for a driving enthusiast. A very desirable, early production, left-hand drive, US Series I that has been superbly restored and is now 'turn-key' ready.Thanks to the vision of legendary automotive designer, Albrecht von Goertz, and the commercial determination of Nissan’s US-chief, Yutaka Katayama, the 240Z was first released to considerable acclaim on 22nd October 1969, aggressively positioned and priced to compete with the directly comparable Mercedes 280SL, Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911T and Jaguar E-Type. Over time it evolved in to the 260Z and latterly the 280Z, but it's the original 240Z that has always been the most desirable due to their purity of line and simplicity of design. The car put Datsun (now Nissan) firmly on the map in the States as a credible Japanese sports car in the early 1970s and those early cars remain the most collectable.Here we have a rare, early left-hand drive car from the USA that has just been professionally restored by an emerging 240Z specialist restoration company called DCW Classic located in Lithuania. Their reputation has been growing stronger and, when you examine this car in detail, it's not hard to understand why. They even reproduce specialist parts that are no longer available to buy elsewhere and have quickly gathered a global reputation for detail and quality in the ‘Z’ world.Finished in gleaming Red 110 and displaying an indicated 37,320 miles, the car is supplied with an interesting history file, a fresh MOT and is 'turn-key' ready to use. It's the early chassis-number cars, essentially the first 3,000 units, that are tipped by the likes of market expert, Quentin Willson, to be the best investments over the long term and that is exactly what's on offer here. An important piece of early Lotus history. The Earl's Court Motorshow car and still boasting some interesting and unique design features that never made it onto later production cars.The Lotus Elite Type 14, when first launched in 1958, put Colin Chapman and Lotus cars very firmly on the map. It utilised a monocoque construction which meant there was no separate chassis and the body was load bearing, and whilst this was becoming accepted practice, the Elite was the first time it had been attempted in glass-fibre. When combined with independent sporty suspension, a ZF gearbox, disc brakes, a Coventry Climax all-aluminium engine and a very low drag coefficient of just 0.29 - it made for a great drivers car. So much so that by production end in 1963 over one thousand had been produced and Lotus was now a credible British sports car manufacturer.The lilac-hued Type 14, chassis #1008 on offer here is a rather special car and an important part of early Lotus history. It is the eigth pre-production prototype Elite and was displayed on the Lotus stand at the 1958 Earls Court Motor Show. The car that followed it, #1009, is recognised as the first genuine production car and was originally purchased by one of Colin Chapman's favoured customers and friends, jazz legend Chris Barber. Initially, 008 was used by the then Lotus works driver, Keith Hall, for road use until 1960. This example and the other prototypes were being sold or lent to selected racing drivers in the late 1950s to gain publicity whilst at the same time discovering any weaknesses before full production started.After Keith Hall’s time with the car, chassis 008 passed in 1960 to its first private owner, who staggeringly kept it for the following 60 years! Under this long-term ownership the car was preserved in its Motor Show appearance both inside and out, as you can see by the charmingly original patina of the Lilac bodywork and original yellow interior. Documented in the huge accompanying history file are details and letters regarding the installation of a 1,500cc Cosworth-modified Ford engine, with a close ratio gearbox due to the poor reliability of the original 1,220cc Climax. This unit was fitted relatively early in the car's life as you’ll see in the letter dated 9th March 1964 to Mr Costin by the then owner.The result of this change meant a huge improvement in both the reliability and performance of 6 SML as recently confirmed by renowned marque expert, Paul Matty, who told Silverstone recently just how good this car is to drive today. Paul knows the car well and, in fact sold 6 SML to the current owner, who is only the second registered keeper, following his predecessor's 60 years of loyalty to the little Lotus.008 boasts some interesting and unique design features that never made it onto later production, one of which is the fuel tank which is encapsulated in the right front wing. There is an incredible amount of history accompanying this special car, far too much to list here as you can see from some of the accompanying photographs, so we highly recommend interested parties come see the car and the owner's file for themselves to really understand the history and preservation on offer here.By the time Elite production ceased in September 1963, 1,030 examples had been built and Lotus had developed from a company unheard of outside of UK club racing to one of the most famous racing teams in the world. They were about to be crowned F1 World Champions for the first time with Jim Clark, and were seen as established world players in road car manufacture with a mature market presence in the USA and elsewhere. The Elite played a big part in this remarkable feat of automotive industrial growth. It was Lotus' first 'grown-up', credible road car and laid down the foundations of the Lotus business that still exists today.Cars are only original once, and 6 SML needs be preserved and cherished by its next owner.
