Booth (Charles). Descriptive Map of London Poverty 1889, pub. Stanfords, [1891], general key map titled ‘Map Shewing degrees of Poverty in London in Areas with about 30, 000 Inhabitants in each Compiled from Information Collection in 1889-1890’, lithograph printed in monotone, approx. 640 x 880mm, and four folding regional colour lithographic maps with colour key below each map, each approx. 570 x 615mm, very occ. short closed tears, contained in contemp. blue cloth gilt solander box. The map is based on Stanford’s ‘Library Map of London’, but its importance lies in the depiction and extent of poverty in London at the end of the 19th century. Booth’s survey was highly detailed almost to the point of pedantry. Every street is shown and classified by a colour code into ‘The Lowest Class. Viscious, semi-crimminal’, ‘Very Poor casual, Chronic want’, through severn different orders ending with ‘Upper-middle and Upper classes, Wealthy’. This map was published as part of ‘Labour and Life of the People’, which was Booth’s monumental polemic on poverty. In this work Booth argued that chronic pauperism inevitably led to depravity and that recognition of endemic poverty and the problems it caused must be given greater weight in both in political and social circles. Booth’s highly academic and unemotional approach provided the statistical ammunition needed by those pressing for social change. China. Speed (John), The Kingdom of China newly augmented by J.S. 1626, pub. Thomas Bassett & Richard Chiswell, [1676], uncoloured engraved ‘carte a figure’ map, elaborate cartouche, eight costumed figures in the vertical margins, some closed marginal tears and some marginal fraying just affecting image, 395 x 520mm, English text on verso, mounted. A fine detailed map of China which was based on the Ortelius map of 1584. There are four oval vignettes along the upper margin which depict the cities of Macao and Quinzay as well as a manner of execution and a method of travelling which depicts a land yacht. The north east of the country is shown as full of devils and fantastic animals. Korea is erroneously mapped as an island and the Bering Straits are described as ‘The Straite of Anian’. (1)

Europe. Ortelius (Abraham), Europae, [1570 or later], engraved map with original hand colouring, decorative cartouche, 345 x 465mm, no text on verso, mounted. Neither Koeman nor Van den Broecke mention a copy of Ortelius’s map of Europe issued without text. Of course, not all map sheets have text on the back. Some would have been sold separately and others bound into composite atlases, however with no records of such a map in what are regarded as the authoritative reference works on the works of Ortelius, this example can be regarded as an unrecorded state. Angling in Troubled Waters, A Serio-Comic Map of Europe, [1899], allegorical colour printed lithographic map, inset geographical map of Europe, tables of reference and explanation, trimmed to neat line and laid on contemp. card, slight spotting, largely confined to margins, closed tear affecting image, slight abrasion to printed surface, 495 x 690mm. (1) The vendor of this lot has kindly included a copy of The Penguin Atlas of Recent History, the cover of which illustrates the map being sold here. The condition of the map has deteriorated during viewing, we presume by careless handling. Would all prospective buyers please be aware that the tear mentioned in the catalogue has progressed resulting in the lower left corner of the map becoming detached. Good restoration should not make this problem insurmountable.

Lot 847

Suffolk. Smith (William), A New Mapp of the County of Suffolk with the Post & Cross Roads & other remarks, according to the latest & best observations, pub. Henry Overton, 1713, hand coloured engraved map, elaborate strapwork cartouche and mileage scale, slight loss to central fold and margins, laid down on later card, 340 x 485mm. William Smith’s ‘anonymous’ maps were first published in 1602 and re-issued by Peter Stent, John Overton and finally Henry Overton. The plates had been considerably altered by the time this map was published. Only twelve counties were ever engraved and all the editions are scarce. (1)
