(and spines lightly faded), generally a good copy, 8vo. Blackmer 1847. Sir Thomas Wyse (1791-1862), a distinguished Anglo-Irish politician, diplomat, linguist and travel writer, was appointed Ambassador to Athens in 1849 and from then on devoted himself to Greek affairs. His obversations on the economic and social conditions of the Peloponnesus were recorded in a remarkable series of journals, which he prepared for publication shortly before his death in 1862. (2)

Visscher (Nicolas J.), Asiae Nova Descriptio Auctore, [1652], fine hand col. eng. map, decorated with city views interspersed with head and shoulder portraits of the kings of Tartary, China, Ceylon, Persia and the Moluccas, with the vertical panels illustrated with costumed figures representing their various countries, old folds strengthened on verso, slight separation along central fold, occ. marginal closed tears expertly repaired on verso, 440 x 555 mm. A highly decorative map which was originally engraved by Pieter van den Keere in 1614. The map draws heavily on the Jodocus Hondius map, although the coastlines of Eastern Asia and Western America are considerably amended. Vissher’s map has a re-worked cartouche with Van den Keere’s clockface being replaced by a seated fisherman mending his nets. The views of the cities are derived from Blaeu’s famous wall map of the continent. A striking and highly ornate example of Dutch 17th century cartography. (1)

Japan. Blaeu (Joan), Japonia Regnum, Amsterdam, [1655-58], fine hand coloured engraved map, 420 x 570 mm. The map was compiled by a Jesuit missionary called Father Martino Martini, and was considered the most accurate map of Japan of its time. It was also the first map to show Korea as a peninsula. The map was published in Bleau’s ‘Atlas Sinensis’, the first European atlas of China and the far east. Campbell 21. (1)
