(Proche Orient, Palestine) - DANCKERTS, Justus.- Nieuwe Caert van `t Heilige Beloofde Lant.Amsterdam, Justus Danckerts, Gedrukt by Cornelis Danckerts, [between 1696 and 1701].Copper engraving, TC 73 x 130 cm, mounted on linnen, colored.Framed with passe-partout.Unique copy of this very important wall-map of the Holy Land printed from 6 copperplates, directed to the east, showing a large town plan and a panoramical view of Jerusalem, and figuring numerous biblical places, facts or events, all with numerous little human figures and explanations in Dutch. Our map must be dated between 1696, when Cornelis III (1664-1717) moved into the adress "op de Nieuwendyk", and 1701, the year his father Justus I, established in "De Danckbaerheyt", died (both adresses are mentioned in two different cartouches).A similar wall-map was produced by Carel Allard (1648-1709) around 1700, together with a Bible, and was entitled "Nieuwe Caarte van `t Beloofde Land en de H[e]ylige Stad Jerusalem". Although on the same scale and presenting the same general design and legends, there are significant differences as for example the legends which are numbered up to 228 on Allard`s map, details in design and a complete different view of Jerusalem. No other copy recorded, even not in the Eran Laor Cartographic Collection at the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem. Beautiful coloring and excellent condition.# Koeman II-88/89; # not in Laor, Maps of the Holy Land, 1986, Van der Sluys, Het Land van de Bijbel, 1986 (see 86/87 for Allard), Tishby (edit.), Holy Land in Maps, 2001.
