Henry Schenck Tanner (1786-1858) Henry Schenck Tanner (1786-1858), "Map of Louisiana and Mississippi... Improved to 1825", Philadelphia, 1825, hand-colored copper-engraved map, plate mark 29 in. x 23 7/8 in., sheet 31 in. x 23 7/8 in., attractively framed Note: This second state of the map, published in 1825, includes significant additions. The Choctaw Purchase in west central Mississippi appears here for the first time. In addition, the formation of Monroe county along the banks of the Tombeckbee River into Chickasaw Indian lands is shown, as is a new boundary line running between Choctaw and Chickasaw lands, from the headwaters of the Wolkee River northwest to the Mississippi River just downstream of Fort Pickering. Another change in this region is a redrawing of the mountain range running through the Indian lands. Several counties have been added to the map, including Covington County in Mississippi, as well as Lafayette and St. Mary`s Counties in Louisiana.

Lot 254

[New Orleans Exposition Map] [New Orleans Exposition Map], "The World`s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, New Orleans, LA... Plan No. 2 Map of the City of New Orleans showing location of exposition grounds and all approaches thereto by land & water", 1884, Southern Litho. Co., New Orleans, with 13 insets or vignettes, accompanied by the original cloth-covered boards, lettered in gilt, the pastedown printed with a "Stranger`s Guide", sheet 27 1/2 in. x 36 3/4 in., attractively framed Note: The Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, held on the centennial of the first known export of cotton from the United States to Great Britain, offered New Orleans a chance to demonstrate to the world how its businesses and infrastructure had been revitalized by Reconstruction. The fair, however, suffered from debt and fraud and was not financially successful. Although the buildings constructed for the fair, held on present day Audubon Park, were among the largest in the United States to that date, all were soon dismantled.

Lot 255

Guillaume De L`Isle (1675-1726) Guillaume De L`Isle (1675-1726), "Special Charte der Mündung derer Americanischen Flüsse Misissipi, Iberville, Mobile,...", Hanover: 1762 [or later], copper-engraved map by Hering, plate mark, 6 1/4 in. x 7 1/8 in., sheet 9 1/8 in. x 10 in., attractively framed Note: This scarce map of the mouth of the Mississippi is based on the inset in Guillaume de l`Isle`s map Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississippi which was first published in Paris in 1718. By 1763, a date mentioned in the title of the present map, the information would have been nearly 50 years out of date, but German emigration to the area and its changing political fortunes after the French and Indian War evidently warranted the production of this charmingly archaic map.
