Ennest Archdeacon (1863-1950) was a prominent French lawyer of Irish descent who was associated with pioneering all forms of aviation in France before the First World War. He partnered Gabriel Voisin to develop many early aircraft and was regarded as France`s foremost promoter and sponsor of aviation, offering prizes, commissioning designs, developing theoretical knowledge, plus organising tests and events. His lasting contribution to aviation is the Aero-Club de France, the oldest aero-club in the world, which he co-founded in 1898 before powered flight. (2)

London Aerodrome, Hendon. Official Programme for The Aerial Derby, Saturday, September 20th, 1913, 48 pp., b & w ports. of the pilots, including Claude Grahame-White, Gustav Hamel, Richard T. Gates, Pierre Verrier, Harry G. Hawker, Norman C. Spratt, Harold Barnwell, and others, each with a short biography, centre-page map of the circuit, commercial ads., etc., orig. printed wrappers, a little soiled and creased at edges (staples rusted), slim 8vo. This was the second aerial derby held at Hendon, attended by some 65,000 people. Gustav Hamel won the event in an 80hp Morane-Saulnier monoplane, completing the 94.5 mile circuit in 1 hour 15 minutes, at an average speed of 75.18 mph. (1)

Colonel T.E. Gordon was part of Sir T.D. Forsyth`s mission to Yarkand to conclude a trade deal with the new ruler of Turkestan, Mohammed Jakub Beg, the treaty signed in 1874, with the members of the expedition going onto explore the area from the Karakorum through Yarkand to Kashgar and the Russian frontier.
