Rome. Lafreri (Antonio), Stephanus du Perac Architet Studioso Lectori: en tibi lector nunc prodit specimen, seu persecta urbis antiquae imago ex priscis illis monumentis scriptorum ueterum, et cunctis quae ad hunc usq. diem superesse uidentur reliquiis, et parietibus quam accuratissime delineata quecumque oculis nostris subiecta esse possunt exigua tabella comprehendens, opus ut immensum sane, sic nec minus antiquitatis omnigenae studiosis apprime necessarium his recentibus formis aeneis t?pis exaratum impensa Antonii Lafrerii, pub. Rome, 1573, uncoloured engraved and etched map of ancient Rome on two conjoined sheets, trimmed to neat lines, two small holes to image, margins and central fold strengthened on verso, old fold, 465 x 600mm. This print was published in the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) Published and produced by Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. The prints of the architecture and views of the city of Rome could be purchased individually or in albums. When Lafreri died, the copper plates were divided beween Claudio and Stefano Duchetti (who took the large majority) and several other smaller publishers. It is the more standardized and uniform production of the Speculum by the Duchetti family which proved the most popular. LafreriÕs name is synonymous with the publication of the magnificent composite atlases produced in the important trading centres of Rome and Venice. Comprising of maps by various cartographers they epitomise the Italian domination of the world of cartography before the emergence of OrteliusÕs Theatrum Orbis Terrarum which was published in Antwerp in 1570 and which marked the beginning of Dutch cartographic supremacy. Saxton, Christopher (c.1544-1610), Warwicki comitatus a nauiis olim inhabitatus, a framed hand coloured 17th century map of Warwickshire which appeared in William Camden`s Britannia (London: 1607-1637), this map comes from the 1637 edition (State III) as the plate number `29` has been added to the bottom left corner, approx. 35cm high by 29cm wide plate size not inc. frame, together with three paintings, one oil, one pastel, one watercolour of scenes from Indonesia, indistinctly signed (4).

A group of World War I and RAF World War II medals and log books etc. to the Fortune family of Rangeworthy, near Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire. The World War I British War and Defence medals to 52051 PTE J.G. Fortune. Glouc. R and 1939 - 45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Burma Star and War medal - all mounted together as worn post-war by Mrs Fortune widow of J G Fortune and mother of Fl/Lt Frederick Charles Fortune, killed on active service 14th May 1945 in Burma. FC Fortunes operationally detailed Piloto Flying Book from 30th March 1941 to 10th May 1945 with operations in Hurricanes with 136 and 176 Sqns. Beaufighters with 176 Sqdn and Mosquitoes with 45 Sqdn, almost completing three tours of duty when his Log Book was stamped - Killed on Active Service - He is well noted in Hurricanes over the Arakan by Norman Franks from/to whom there are several letters. A detailed obituary including last flight and photos of him and his grave, his personal photo album with aircraft and pilots photos, signed 136/176 Sqdn menus, cloth badge Burma area map, Imperial War Graves Commission Far East cemeteries illustrated book etc. plus books - Forgotten Skies, Russell and Jungle Pilot, Sutton. Also a World War II War Medal with slip, in transmission box to F. Officer M.J. Good very fine. Aristide Blank (1883-1960), Jewish Romanian financier, economist and banker, with interests in America. He was the victim of an attack in April 1924, an incident that sparked a considerable anti-Semitic campaign in Bucharest.
