The Fens A Discourse touching the draying the Great Fennes lying within the severall counties of Lincolne, Northampton, Huntington, Norfolke, Suffolke, Cambridge and the Isle of Ely as it was presented to his Majestie by Sir Cornelius Vermuiden, Knight. Published by Authority, London. Printed by Thomas Fawcet, dwelling in Grub Street neere the lower Pumpe 1642 4to 32pp, lacking folding map (a photograph of which is loosely inserted), title page soiled with two chips and one small area of tape repair, otherwise contents good. Pagination error to pp 14&15 which are paginated ‘10 & 11’, modern boards. Wing V241 An extremely rare publication. We have managed to trace only two other copies appearing on the market in the last 30 years Vermuyden the great Dutch engineer was appointed by Charles I in 1639 to undertake the epic task of draining the fens and thus reclaim hundreds of square miles of land from the sea – one of the greatest engineering achievements of all time. His famous discourse appeared in 1642, and in it he sets out his methods – which included a radical new approach of providing ‘washes’ – areas of land which could be flooded in times of excess rain in order to absorb the extra water. The work continued into the 1650s and provided us with what is today most of East Anglia.
