a Set of Four George II Table Candlesticks, by John Cafe, London 1752, of typical multiple knopped design, the flared shaped square nozzles with shells at the angles and engraved with the horse crest of Fingall, the indented and shaped square cast bases engraved with a further similar crest, 24cm high See illustration provenance: Arthur-James Plunkett, Earl of Fingall, and Baron Killeen of Killeen Castle, Co Meath in the Peerage of Ireland. The title was created in 1628. Killeen Castle was built in 1161 by Hugh de Lacey, the first Lord Palatine of Meath. Arthur-James Plunkett, Earl of Fingall, was a well known face in the racing world, and won many races under National Hunt Rules and was regarded as one of the best gentlemen riders of his day. A particular trait was that he always wore his glasses when he rode. Amongst his triumphs as an owner on the turf, was the winning of the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1959. The family is related to Saint Oliver Plunkett, canonised in 1975 by Pope Paul VI. Arthur-James Plunkett was the uncle of the present vendor.

a Fine and Rare Napoleon III Gilt Brass Table Regulator with Perpetual Calendar and Equation of Time, stamped Achille Brocot, No.2778, Retailed by J W Benson, the arched case with bevelled glasses to the front and rear, the dial with enamelled Roman numeral chapter ring and central recess with visible Brocot jewelled escapement, enamel rolling moonphase for lunar scale and signed "J W Benson", blued steel moon hands and centre seconds, subsidiary enamel dials below indicating day of the week, date, month with combined Zodiac signs, time of sunrise and of sunset and the equation of time in a sector aperture, the whole arrangement with a gilt mask finely engraved with scroll foliate decoration, twin barrel movement striking on a bell, four back pinned pillars, movement backplate numbered "2778", below the movement connected with lever to the calendar movement similarly numbered "2778" and stamped within a star shaped cartouche "AB" for "Achille Brocot", gridiron pendulum with bevelled glass within the circular bob, 45cm high See illustration achille Brocot is recorded between (1817-1878) as a mathematician and famous clockmaker. in his career he was awarded a first class medal at the 1855 Paris Exhibition. after that he went on to invent the Brocot escapement in 1860, another important invention he devised was the perpetual calendar. His famous trademark was advertised in the 1864 Almanach Artistique as he stamped the movement backplate AB within a star.
