A GEORGE IV BURR OAK WORK TABLE ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, C.1825-30 the tray top with a scroll carved edge, above a cedar lined frieze drawer to either end, with nulled mouldings, the frieze with a sliding frame for a work basket, above leaf and scroll carved lyre shaped supports, united by a dished tray stretcher, on leaf and cabochon carved legs, on pad feet with sunken brass castors 72cm high, 70cm wide, 48cm deep Provenance The Estate of the late Jane Sumner. Catalogue Note This table follows closely the original design by Gillows which can be found in their Estimate Sketch Book, 23th August 1822, for Sir. T. D. Hesketh. For a virtually identical table, see Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster & London, 1730-1840, p.303, pl.332 and a table of the same design appears on the front cover of Volume II. A similar example in mahogany was sold by Christie's, 'Parisian Taste in London', 10th September 2009, lot 343. Interestingly, the three cited examples all have a work bag slide but no evidence of a bag having been fitted and it seems that the clients preferred to make their own bag.
