Macheath, etching on laid paper mounted on support with ruled black ink border, sheet 365 x 260 mm. (14 3/8 x 10 1/4 in), small repaired nicks to extremities, minor surface dirt, unframed, [1728].Literature:BM Satires 1806⁂ Satire on the popularity of Gay's Beggar's Opera, first staged in 1728, executed in the form of a medley print. At top left a print shows two oval portraits, Lavinia Fenton as Polly Peachum on the left and Thomas Walker as Macheath on the right. At bottom right is a scene in Newgate with men and women sitting round a table on which is a punch bowl and pipes; they are toasting a laureated John Gay who sits at the centre, saying 'The Beggers Opera for yr', 'G(a)y for ever', 'Let's vote him King of the Beggers' and he responds, 'Yov'e done me too great an honour but I'll -'. δ Gandhi.- Fearon (Percy Hutton) "Poy". Fat Stock! "The Smallest Man May Own the Biggest Elephant" Old Indian Proverb, pen and ink cartoon with some blue pencil shading, pencil caption beneath, a small Gandhi sits atop a huge elephant with 'Preposterous Bill' below, two further elephants follow behind bearing the inscriptions 'Colossal Cheek' and 'Elephant Impudence' following a sign to 'Round Table Conference', signed, 316 x 387 mm., [1930-32].⁂ The three Round Table Conferences of 1930-32 were a series of conferences organized by the British Government, with the Indian National Congress participating to discuss constitutional reforms in India. δ Gandhi.- Fearon (Percy Hutton) "Poy". "They don't know where they're going - but they're on their way! Hitching our Wagon to a comet", pen and ink cartoon with some blue pencil shading, pencil caption beneath, the head of Gandhi flies into the sky dragging an apple cart with two gentlemen struggling to hold on, the cart is spilling over and is inscribed 'Empire Apple Cart', signed, 317 x 390 mm., [1929-31].⁂ By 1931 Gandhi had become integral to Indian national life and was the sole representative of the Indian National Congress at the second Round Table Conference, which failed to yield independence for India.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

"How to get it all in the suit case? - That is the World-Wide problem at this holiday season", pen and ink cartoon with some blue pencil shading, pencil caption beneath, with Gandhi standing wearing a loin cloth, a large question mark above his head, while he surveys items on the floor of his room, with two goats, one nibbling at a guide to London, signed, 255 x 340 mm., [1931].⁂ Gandhi's last visit to London was in 1931, where he came for the Second Round Table Conference, arriving on September 12th and staying until December 5th. δ Churchill and India.- Fearon (Percy Hutton) "Poy". Who'll Buy? Who'll Buy?, pen and ink cartoon with some shading in blue pencil, pencil caption and explanatory note beneath, a sale of paintings depicts Churchill looking at a painting of Gandhi, a goat and a "softie" seated at a table, and Churchill saying "What will I bid? Well, tuppence for the goat.", signed, 320 x 390mm., [c.1932].⁂ Other characters in this scene subtitled "How Fares the market in the World of Art" include George Lansbury and James Maxton; De Valera, Sir Herbert Samuel and Neville Chamberlain.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
