An unusual George II mahogany table, c.1740, with a solid lift off top revealing an oak liner, over brass carrying handles and shell carved pad foot cabriole legs, 77cm wide, 52cm deep, 71cm high. The function of this unusual table is unclear. The closest analogy is perhaps with those tea or breakfast tables which have a well under the top in which teapot, cups and other necessaries are kept. Leeds City Art Galleries has an example attributed to Thomas Potter (fl. 1737-8) with a sliding top and rising tray in the well, which could be considered a more sophisticated version of the present lot.
