Scotland. Wyld (James, pub.), Ainslies Travelling Map of Scotland shewing the Distances from One Stage to Another, 1830, uncoloured engraved folding map, sectionalised onto linen, ornamental title cartouche and triangular distance table, approx. 620 x 570 mm, contained in orig. cloth slipcase with printed paper label to upper cover (some wear to extrems.) With the ink ownership signature of Lady Hardy to paper label of slipcase and verso of map (the latter is also dated 1836). Lady Anne Louisa Emily Hardy (c.1790-1877) was the wife of Captain Hardy - famously at the side of Horatio Nelson at the time of his death. (1)

Babbage (Charles). Examples of the Solutions of Functional Equations, 1st ed., Printed by J. Smith, Cambridge, 1820, one eng. table, bound with Peacock (George) A Collection of Examples of the Applications of the Differential and Applied Calculus, Cambridge, 1820, six folding diagramatical tables, oval library stamp on title-page and withdrawn ink stamp on verso, plus Herschel (John F.W.), A Collection of Examples of the Applications of the Calculus of Finite Differences, Cambridge, 1820, modern sprinkled polished calf, lower cover a little rubbed, 8vo in 4's While at Cambridge Babbage and his friends in the Analytical Society fought a battle with the Cambridge establishment to replace the Newtonian dot notation for the calculus with the more powerful Leibnizian dx/dy notation. To this end, Babbage, Herschel and Peacock translated Lacroix's elementary treatise on the calculus which, like all continental works, followed Leibniz. The change over continued to move slowly and Babage decided it was necessary to provide some worked examples, which took the form of the present work. Within a few years Babbage had won the day and British mathematicians, no longer impeded by an imperfect notation, began to catch up with their continental rivals. (1)
