A George III burr yew, mahogany and floral marquetry octagonal tripod table, circa 1770, the hinged top with burr yew sectional radiating veneer centred by a circular branch of flowers in marquetry, within a chequer banded and mahogany crossbanded border, on reeded column and moulded outswept legs joined by a triform iron stretcher, 72cm high, the top 77cm diameter For another related design of table, see Helen Hayward and Pat Kirkham, William and John Linnell , Rizzoli, 1980, p139, pl.273 For a related design of table by Ince & Mayhew see Anthony Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, Faber & Faber 1968, pl 115. The plate illustrating three 'Claw Tables' (dated 1762) particularly reflect a similarity to the legs of the current table with their 'hipped' and moulded downswept design with integral tapering feet. The overall quality of the table, use of unusual timber and high quality marquetry would point towards the workshop of a significant cabinet maker. A Regency rosewood, parcel gilt and brass inlaid centre table, circa 1810, in the manner of Marsh and Tatham, after Henry Holland, the circular tilt top, above inlaid frieze on reeded column and triform pedestal with wing and claw feet 77cm high, 112cm diameter For a remarkably similar table see Sothebys, London 18th November 2008, lot 226 and another sold 'Property from Two Ducal Collections, Woburn Abbey, Bedford' Christie's house sale, 20-21 September 2004, lot 1150 This table is closely associated to a group in the late Georgian style promoted by the architect Henry Holland. Holland's designs were in part inspired by his pupil, Charles Heathcote Tatham made during a visit to Rome in the last decade of the 18th century. Henry Holland is considered to have collaborated with the furniture makers William Marsh and Thomas Tatham in the design of closely related tables for Hollands project of Southill Park, Bedfordshire. It is also significant that Thomas Tatham's brother Charles Heathcote Tatham was employed by the firm and therefore may have contributed to the designs for this commission (G. Jackson Stops, Southill Park, Country Life, 28 April 1994, fig 11) Marsh and Tatham also worked with Henry Holland and Dominique Daguerre for the Duke of Bedford at Woburn and for the Prince of Wales at Carlton House (C. Gilbert and G. Beard, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp 623-624) A library table with an almost identical pillar and base, recorded in the Heathcote collection at Normanton Park, Rutland is illustrated in M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture 1795-1830, 1965, fig. 172 Refer to the following two lots from the same property that also relate closely to this table.
A George II carved giltwood centre table , possibly Irish , circa 1735, the marble top above acanthus and bell flower decorated frieze and each side centred with carved native American mask and scrolling foliage surround, the legs headed by similar masks on scroll carved legs and claw feet, joined by x-stretchers and central finial, 80cm high, 140cm wide, 73cm deep The overall design of this gilt console table with central mask and the profiles on either leg and the frieze with floral swags would suggest that this table is possibly Irish. See The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture , Yale University Press, 2007, page 222, fig. 68. The manner in which the masks to the friezes and corners of this table are carved is also very similar to those demonstrated several tables in the same book.

A pair of George III mahogany and kingwood crossbanded occasional tables , circa 1770, each octagonal tilt top inlaid with a central radiating floral motif and with a further repeated leaf and berry border, on a turned column and tripod legs with scrolled feet 73cm high, 54cm diameter Provenance: Being sold on behalf of the executors of the estate of Lady Janet Llewellyn( nee Edmondes). By repute one of the current tables was given to Lady Llewellyn as wedding present in 1956. The other table was reunited in 1969. The tables almost certainly came from Old Hall, Cowbridge. The house was revamped in the latter part of 18th century in the 'classical' manner suggesting that may have been when the tables were brought into the house originally. This fine pair of tripod tables relates closely to a design by Thomas Sheraton in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer s Drawing Book of 1793 (Part II, Plate 25). The simple elegance of the downturned scrolled feet and carved base are almost identical to Sheraton s drawing on the top left-hand side of the plate, while the octagonal top appears in the drawing on the right-hand side of the plate. There are two examples of tripod tables with a similar shaped base at Ightham Mote, Kent (National Trust, inv. Number 825107, 825111). For another example of a similarly shaped table with octagonal top, see F. Lewis Hinckley s Hepplewhite, Sheraton & Regency Furniture Plate 68 No. 201. The marquetry tops feature an intricate patarae encircled by a ring of floral decoration. The decorative scheme is classically inspired and relates closely to both Sheraton s designs as well as designs by George Hepplewhite, particularly in his Cabient-Maker and Upholsterer s Guide of 1794. The tripod table tops draw elements of design included in Plates 32, 33, and 34 from this publication. These tables embody the height of the fashion for Sheraton designs with their light and elegant profiles and simply executed decorative schemes.
