Robert J. Hayhurst inherited and improved a successful group of retail pharmacies, John Hayhurst & Son, based in Nelson, Lancashire. Woodward (John). An A ttempt Towards a N atural H istory of the F ossils of England, in a catalogue of the English fossils in the collection of J. Woodward, 2 volumes in one, 1st edition, London: F. Fayram, J. Senex, J. Osborn and T. Longman, 1729–1728, light dampstain to upper outer corners of initial leaves, few minor spots, contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked preserving original spine, recent morocco title label, 8voThe first volume is divided into two parts; the second volume is divided into five parts, each of which has separate pagination, although the signatures are continuous throughout. This is Woodward ’s last work, published posthumously, in which he catalogued his extensive collection using a “more elaborate and rational” system than ever seen before. “ Woodward was the first British author to publish a systematic classification and description of minerals based on his own observations; and he emphasised the importance to his country of its mineral wealth. His classification of fossil organic remains was one of the earliest of its kind” (DSB).(Qty: 1)NB: We trace one auction copy with a folding letterpress table, but none is called for by ESTC.

Overton (Philip & Bowles Thomas, publishers), A New Map of the County of York laid down from an actual survey wherein is included not only all Towns, Villages, Churches, Roads, Rivers, Mountains, Rapes, Hundreds &c. but also all Gentlemen's Houses & whatever else is remarkable therein, 1728, large hand coloured engraved map on two conjoined sheets, decorative floriate cartouche and table of explanation, 565 x 965 mm, mounted, framed and glazedA close copy of John Warburton's large scale map of Yorkshire. This map has been recorded in Jean Covens & Corneille Mortier's 'Atlas Nouveau contenant Toutes les Parties du Monde...,' but the lack of any folds in this example suggest that this was published separately. Uncommon, this being only the second copy to appear in auction in the last twelve years (both in these rooms).(Qty: 1)

Keppel (Henry). The Expedition to Borneo of H.M.S. Dido for the Suppression of Piracy: with Extracts from the Journal of James Brooke of Sarawak, 2 volumes, 1st edition, Chapman and Hall, 1846, 11 lithographic plates (all but one tinted), 6 folding maps, folding table, plates and maps variably spotted and offset, small chip to lower outer corner of volume 1 list of plates, original purple blind-stamped cloth, spines sunned, pale marks, 8voHill 918; not in Abbey. After the end of the First Opium War 'K eppel was sent to Singapore as senior officer on that part of the station. There he made friends with Sir James Brooke , with whom he returned to Sarawak. For eighteen months he co-operated with Brooke for the suppression of Borneo piracy, and, after many engagements, the Dido , together with the East India Company's steamship Phlegethon , destroyed the chief stronghold of the pirates, together with some 300 prahus' (ODNB). There was a second edition the same year.(Qty: 2)

Braun, Carlsruhe, circa 1830, 14 double-page sheets of printed numbers arranged in rows and columns, the last ten sheets presenting numbers 0-999 numerically with 100 numbers per sheet (10 rows and 10 columns), publisher's details printed to lower right margin of each table, a little spotting and some creasing, contemporary marbled boards, heavily rubbed, a little soiling and corner wear, 4toSeemingly complete in itself, but without title-page or explanatory letterpress, it is not clear if this was published as part of a larger work.(43 x 37cm)
