He accompanied Alexandre Le Blond where he was commissioned to work in St Petersberg designing and creating a variety of decorative features - his piece de resistance being the Grand Cabinet made for Peter the Great. He returned to Paris in 1727 where, despite a general moving on in fashionable styles, he enjoyed a vogue extraordinaire. His designs spread throughout Europe which ensured that elements of his oeuvre were incorporated into interior design until the end of the 18th century.

Here it is described as having ' the elegance and strength that would have made it ideal for an officers' mess about the time of the Battle of Waterloo'. When fully dismantled with the legs stowed away inside the body of the table, it would measure no more than 6in in height.
