18th Century Manuscript Volumes on French Peerage Manuscript: "Recueil de tous les actes concernant les Ducs & Pairs de France. Ensemble L'origine de la Pairie d'Angleterre & des Grands d'Espagne. Depuis l'an 900 jusqu'en 1660." Vol. II & III (ex 3) 4to, 327 and 391ff respectively. Bound in contemporary mottled calf with embossed gold tooled supralibros and elaborately gold tooled spine. Marbled endpapers. In excellent condition, apart from slight cracking of joints in vol 3.The arms embossed in gold tooling on the boards of both volumes are those of Gabriel Bernard, Comte de Rieux (1687-1745), a member of the Parlement de Paris and from 1727, President of the Chambre des Comptes. In this capacity he presumably needed works such as these, reproducing the decrees associated with the peerage of France. In his fine pastel portrait by Maurice Quentin de la Tour, now in the Getty Center, Los Angeles, he is shown wearing his official robes,seated in his library; on the table beside him repose two volumes very similar in appearance to those now on offer.
