A George III mahogany tripod table, possibly Irish, circa 1770, the top of serpentine outline, with fan marquetry to centre, with spindle gallery with moulded edge, above a fluted baluster stem, on three carved cabriole legs, with acanthus and hairy paw carved feet and castors, 74cm high, 73cm wide
A Regency mahogany and inlaid card table, circa 1815, stamped ‘WILINSONS MOORFIELD LONDON PATENT’, the demi-lune shaped top with fluted edge opening to a baize inset, the base with a dual swing action, on four downswept ebony inlaid scrolling supports, on a rectangular base with four downswept legs, brass paw caps and castors, 72,5cm high, 88cm wide, 44cm deep. William and his cousin Thomas Wilkinson operated a successful cabinet making business at 9 & 10 Brokers Row, Moorfields. In 1807 William left to take over the old established firm of Quentin Kaye in Ludgate Hill. In the early to mid 1820s William brought his two sons William Ayscough Wilkinson and Charles Wilkinson into the business, which then changed its name from William Wilkinson, cabinet-maker and upholder, to William Wilkinson & Sons.
A William IV rosewood side table, in the manner of Gillows, circa 1835, the rectangular top with gadrooned edge, on a base with dual trestle style supports each with three spindle supports, united by a rectangular stretcher, on downswept legs with stylised scroll caps and castors, 73cm high, 74cm wide, 34cm deep. For a similar table see Christie’s, Furniture and Carpets including two Private Collections , 24 January 2008 London, King Street . ‘The reed-enriched pedestals of this writing-table, with Etruscan-scrolled ‘claws’, are of Grecian-lyre form with spindle ‘strings’ and lozenge-enriched bars. The pedestal pattern, including the palm-wrapped castor-sockets, features in the Gillows 1818 Estimate Sketch Book (nos 2079 and 2084) and is illustrated in G.Wills, Craftsmen and Cabinet-makers of Classic English Furniture, Edinburgh, 1974, pp. 117-8 and figs. 108 and 109. A related rosewood table, bearing the stamp of the retailer James Winter is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 497, fig. 1022. A similar rosewood writing-table, attributed to Gillows, was sold anonymously, Christie’s, London, 9 July 1998, lot 90
