A George III silver table epergne, assayed London 1805, maker "TH" (unidentified), of stepped oval form, the rim repousse floral scrolls on four cast supports fashioned as a standing woman flanked by acanthus leaves, the base section with pierced repousse side of a woman in chariot being drawn by birds, acanthus leaves and floral swags, raised upon four griffin head supports, with four branch fitments, each serpentine arm fashioned as a dragons head with coiled tail supporting the pierced glass bowl holders. Holding later central cut glass bowl, the smaller bowls lacking. Heraldry: engraved motto "Virtute et Opera" above heraldic shield. Height exc. glass bowl 31.2cm x length at base 32.7cm. (silver weight approx. 93.2Toz./2900g) Condition note: All four branches present and in good order, one of four floral swags and chariot reins lacking (additional image added), centre bowl with several chips to rim (additional image added), repaired underneath with lead solder, pieces lacking.
