ARTS & CRAFTS 'KELMSCOTT' TABLE, CIRCA 1875 oak(183cm long, 72cm high, 99cm deep )Note: This model was originally designed by Philip Webb circa 1875, and which William Morris had in his study at Kelmscott House, Hammersmith. There is a watercolour by Mary A. Sloane ('May Morris in Tapestry Room at Kelmscott Manor', 1910-15), which depicts William Morris' daughter May editing the twenty-four volumes of Collected Works by William Morris at the Kelmscott table. The picture is held in the William Morris Gallery, Waltham Forest, London. A table of this design can still be found in the Tapestry Room at Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire.

Lyon & Turnbull, Decorative Arts, April 2004, lot 328 for a similar example in mahogany Note: In 1861 Philip Webb began collaborating with William Morris at Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later Morris & Co.). After designing a similar table for Sir Edward Burne-Jones in the 1850's, the firm later produced several related examples for high-profile commissions. These included Old Swan House, Chelsea, designed by Sir Richard Norman Shaw for the connoisseur Wickham Flower, and Great Tangley Manor in Sussex, where Webb carried out extensions in 1885. A similar walnut version of this table is in the collection at Standen, the Arts and Crafts house Webb designed in 1891, now in the care of the National Trust.

Note: George Washington Jack was the chief furniture designed for Morris and Co. from 1890. Prior to this in 1879, he had undertaken some work for the architect Philip Webb and by 1882 was a full-time employee of Webb’s. From 1885 Jack was working for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. as well as Philip Webb. There is a similar example of this table held in the William Morris Gallery Collection in Walthamstow (cat. no. G37). It is of comparable form, with hay-rake stretchers in the same arrangement and brackets supporting the overhanging table surface.

The porcelain panel is painted in Qianjiang cai enamels with a standing lady holding a fan accompanied by an attendant holding a dish with two peaches. There is a table with auspicious objects such as crolls, bound books and a porcelain vase. The upper right corner is inscribed with calligraphy combined with a red seal. An 18th century Portuguese Colonial rosewood centre table, with gadroon rectangular top over two cushion drawers, on turned and spiralled twist underframe with pad feet, W.103cm D.63cm H.80cmOverall of a slightly dull darkish brown tone, the top has seen numerous water splashes and other wear over the years and has a join in the separation of the timbers showing a third in from the front as well as one split running from the right hand side, underframe of a darker tone, drawers both with some small losses to the edge mouldings, with original brass escutcheons, one slightly bent forward and original locks but no key, turning to the underframe with some old knocks and dents, one section at the top of a leg is loose but present in the drawer, sides and back both have simulated drawer fronts.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
