Lot 114

A well-engineered model of a Whitmore and Binyon Fixed Engine, built by Mr D Russell of Frazerburgh from drawings by Anthony Mount based on the original 1870 s engine, the base of the engine being of circular form and supporting a single cylinder with steam valve on top operated by an eccentric linkage from the centre of the engine. The twin belt drive wheels are mounted horizontally on a table supported by reeded columns with matching column supporting the watts type speed governor having shut-off linkage to steam inlet. The engine has an unusual vertical crank shaft with cross-head guides and brass oiler cups. Sole plate diameter 26cm. Total length 35cm. Overall height 20cm. Mounted on hardwood plinth and finished in green paintwork. * The original engine was designed by Whitmore and Sons of Wickham Market, Suffolk, and was exhibited at the International Exhibition at South Kensington in 1862, (not to be confused with the Great Exhibition of 1851), where it gained an exhibition prize medal. The company in 1868 changed its name to Whitmore and Binyon. The company was founded by Nathaniel Whitmore in 1780 as a smithy for hand tools and agricultural machinery. The main purpose of the unusual design was to drive direct by belt the vertical spindles of the old style flour mills.

Lot 48

An early freelance model of a Burrell road locomotive Starlight with crane and living van, built by Mr J E Davies of Swindon and being spirit fired, cab with regulator and direction control, crank driven water pump and bevel gear drive to crane, belly tanks, spoked and straked wheels. The model finished in brick coloured paintwork with brass boiler bands and sign written canopy. Length 72cm. Width 18cm. Height to top of canopy 25cm. The model comes together with a well-built living van having corrugated metal finish. Interior fitted with wood burning stove, bed, table, seats and ledge and brace stable type door. The living van was also built by Mr J E Davies of Swindon. Length 26cm. Width 16cm. Height 27cm. * No boiler history available. Framed photograph of the engine with its builder.

Lot 96

A well-engineered 1 inch scale freelance model of a steam table engine, built by Mr D. Russell of Fraserburgh and based on a Waller s table engine, the single cylinder approximately â…ž inch bore by 1 ¾ inch stoke, with open crank having brass cup oilers and set on reeded columns, eccentric driven steam valve, the single cylinder lagged in planked hardwood with brass banding, steam control valve, spoked flywheel 22cm diameter, small spoked belt drive wheel. The model finished in green paintwork with brightwork, mounted on hardwood plinth measuring 15cm x 15cm, overall 39cm high. Note: The first table engine is credited to Henry Maudslay in 1805, the type was built by many manufacturers during the nineteenth century. This example is a later one from the 1880s. Details came from a book published in the 1880s, the author was a director of George Waller and Co.

Russell of Fraserburgh, of table engine design, with central trapezium motion linked to central open crank, with second layer table supporting the single cylinder â…ž inch bore by 1 ¾ inch stroke, lagged in planked hardwood with brass banding, steam control valve, eccentric linkage to steam valve, brass oiler cups to crank, 22cm spoked flywheel and spoked belt drive wheel, The model finished in green paintwork with reeded columns and polished brightwork, mounted on hardwood plinth measuring 22cm x 16cm, overall 37cm high.
