James Ward, RA (British, 1769-1859) Mrs George Morland seated at a table, 1777 inscribed top right "Mrs George Morland / Study for the Clean Face Rewarded" and lower left "J. W. 1799" black chalk 23½ x 17½cm (9 x 7in) Provenance: From the collection of Philip Goodman. This is a study for the figure on the right-hand side of Ward's painting "The Clean Face Rewarded". Ward made a mezzotint of it in 1801 and published it with a companion piece "The Temptation to be Washed". Perhaps a little discolouraton to the background but fine.
§ Sir John Verney (British, 1913-1993) The King's Lynn Festival Table - a small decorated table with a scene of an orchestra of naked maidens playing a concerto at the King's Lynn Festival, Norfolk signed lower left "Verney" oil on panel 58 x 59cm (23 x 23in) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Exhibited: Gainsborough's House, Sudbury, Suffolk, Sir John Verney Memorial Exhibition, 26 November 1994-22 January 1995. John Verney, painter and illustrator, film director's assistant and baronet, Yeomanry officer and parachutist, traveller and lover of most things British, especially Farnham, Surrey, was also wonderful company to his many friends, master of the ludicrous, inventor of the 'Dodo-Pad' and author of one of the best memoirs of the Second World War, "Going to the Wars". In later life he lived at Clare in Suffolk - where visitors came for Sunday lunch and he painted in a converted stable-loft - Sir John loved painting on unusual surfaces, and his tabletop "Rape of the Sabines" memorably encapsulates his characteristic irony. Condition appears fine.
