A highly decorative pair of French-style gilt-bronze table lamps and shades; modelled as cherubic figures, one holding a paddle, the other holding a spear and seated upon a white fluted marble plinth, further upon a gilt-bronze circular base modelled as a laurel wreath, approx. 59cm high (including shades)
A hand-decorated Royal Doulton figure, 'Clotilde', HN 1599; printed and painted marks to underside, 18.5cm high CONDITION REPORT: The piece appears in good original overall condition and order, no restoration, breakages, cracks or chips noted although where the base touches the table top it has naturally darkened commensurate with age.
A pair of early-20th century silver-mounted turned hardwood Arts and Crafts table candlesticks; the circular silver drip-pans with castellated-style edges above turned wooden stems (probably rosewood), assay marks for London 1904, maker's mark rubbed but most probably Francis Higgins (Francis Higgins was one of the leading silversmiths of the mid-Victorian era, he had been apprenticed to George Smith and his work was always of the highest quality, 12cm high and the wooden base 8.5cm in diameter CONDITION REPORT: The turned hardwood stems appear to be in very good general overall condition with some minor scratching to the underside of the base as expected. The makers mark on the hallmark has not been stamped in at the same depth as the other marks and therefore is not exactly immediately apparent but as per the description we think this is Francis Higgins. The silver mounts appear in good general overall original condition with no “major” problems noted although there is some minor tarnishing and staining which in our opinion could be removed with a good silver polish.
A rare Royal Doulton figure; large lady balloon seller (with child), also known as 'Balloon Woman' HN583, 1923-1949 CONDITION REPORT: The glaze is crazing as to be expected under close inspection but nothing major. The underside of the foot appears naturally darker where it has been standing on a table. No cracks, chips, hairlines or restoration noted. The piece appears to be in fairly good overall original condition with no major condition issues.
A 19th century gilt-bronze vase (now as a table lamp); circular neck flanked by two mythical beasts and strapwork in early style to the edges, each side with a central boss in relief surrounded by concentric circles with very fine engraving, raised on oval foot with piercing and French-style scrolls
A Herend porcelain trinket box and cover modelled as a bunch of asparagus tied with a bow, together with one other similar sized trinket dish and cover (not marked but in a Herend design) (2) CONDITION REPORT: The box and cover modelled as asparagus - the underside of the base is quite dirty where it has been placed on a table. The underside has no real problems with no chips, cracks or restoration noted. The lid with the pink bow appears to be in good general overall original condition with no evidence of damage or restoration. The green leaf shaped box and cover - the lower section appears to be in generally good order with no hairlines, chips or restoration noted, although there is a small residue of old sellotape to the underside. The green leaf shaped leaf has two small approx. 1cm sized surplus of glaze residues to the underside of the lid which are original. Being super critical the gilding on the handle is slightly worn at the ends but both boxes and covers appear in generally good honest original condition with no problems noted.
THESE CABINETS HAVE BEEN ADAPTED FROM ANOTHER PIECE OF FURNITURE AND IN THE AUCTIONEER'S VIEW, SOMETIME IN THE LATE 20TH CENTURY An opposing pair of 19th century figured walnut bow-fronted side cabinets; the doors opening to reveal slides, 40cm wide CONDITION REPORT: We are now sure that these cabinets have been converted from one original piece of furniture and they were not made like this. When you turn the cabinets up on the underside there is a hole where a castor used to be and when the cabinet doors are opened it is apparent that the top bow fronted section has been applied to the rest of the piece quite recently, even though the walnut veneer on the top may have originally been produced some time in the early 20th Century. There are some minor scratches and scuffs etc., as you would expect and the polish has dried out and is now producing a horizontal line effect on the tops of the cabinets in the same way that you might see polish degrading on 1930's walnut dressing table suites. Height 62cm x Depth 42.5cm at the deepest point on the top. These are now sold as seen as a pair of bow fronted walnut cabinets and even though the “bones” are 19th Century the cabinets are not “original)
A magnificent dining table and ten-chair set; the large (310cm x 110cm) table plank-topped (fruitwood/walnut?) with angular cleated ends/sides and raised upon two bulbous squared baluster-form supports terminating in large scrolls and united by a central stretcher; together with a set of ten ash rush-seated ladder-back armchairs; most probably originally supplied by I & JL Brown, Kings Road, London, SW6; CONDITION REPORT: The chairs push flush against the table when not in use although the arms fit underneath the planked table top some of them are a tight fit. This may be due to the fact that presently the scrolling base is half standing on decorative carpet and the other half on normal flooring. We think that normally they would slide underneath the table.
An early 20th century hand-decorated Continental porcelain figure group model; female and kneeling suitor, blue painted and impressed marks to underside, 19cm high CONDITION REPORT: Although in generally very good overall condition the piece is not perfect. The young boys right hand is minus his thumb and the end of the finger nearest the thumb. There is some minor "fritting" around the edges of the gilded 'C' scrolls that make up the feet that contact the table surface. One of the feet has a slight chip. The piece looks generally of very good quality overall and the faces are very finely decorated. The rose in the boys left hand appears to be in good order and the rest of the group also appears to be in good order with no major chips, cracks, hairlines or restoration noted. One other foot also appears to have a very small chip away from it but in our opinion this does not detract from the overall look of the piece.
A pair of 19th century Staffordshire spaniels with russet markings, 26cm high CONDITION REPORT: Right hand dot with Lot number on its leg:- Some gilt rubbing as evidenced by the padlock around his leg, minor paint flaking to the first dog in areas. Some glaze cracking commensurate with age. Some minor firing blemishes to the underside of where the recessed foot meets the table surface. Some glaze crazing to the recessed area of the foot. The mouth/nose looks as if it may have had a little over painting and there is a natural firing crack (obscured) underneath the left hand front leg where it affixes to the body. The Second Dog is similar as it has more prominent glaze crazing and rubbing to gilded area etc. There is also some damage with small chips to the front right hand leg, other minor rim fritting to the edge of the base. Otherwise appears in reasonable condition.
A Royal Copenhagen model of a recumbent fox curled up; printed and painted marks to underside, 17cm diameter CONDITION REPORT: There are no chips, cracks or restoration noted although the fox appears quite grubby in places. As expected the underside of the foot where it touches the table has darkened etc., otherwise the fox appears to be in good overall original condition with no flaws or faults.
A large late-19th / early 20th century oak refectory table (possibly French); the planked cleated end top above crossframe base united by a stretcher, 305cm x 84cm CONDITION REPORT: We are not sure if the top and base started out together and basically it has a planked top with cleated ends and there is some splitting and open spaces between the planks where they have shrunk across the grain and therefore exposed small gaps. Commensurate with age there are old scratches and scuffs and various water marks and other marks to the top. The planked top is very heavy as it is just over 4cm in height and one of the corners (nearest the white lot number) has obviously taken a bash at some stage. The top affixes to the top frame base by screws, there is quite a nice colour and patination to the cross frame supports although as you would expect there is some scuffing and marks of age mostly to the ends and extremities. There is a 30cm “crack” to one of the legs but in our view this could be strengthened and polished out by a professional restorer fairly easily. As it is the table stands on this leg quite well and there are no problems noted with the support of the table. The crossframed supports appear to have a chamfering on one of the two supports at each end and one of the bowed supports connecting the 'X' frame legs to the table bearer underneath has dropped slightly away from the legs where the three screws would have originally affixed to it at the cross over point. Again in our view this could be rectified fairly easily. The table has a good rustic/vernacular look to it and with a minimum of effort and polish could look fantastic in the right setting.
A late 18th century George III period breakfront mahogany and rosewood crossbanded serving table; single flush drawer and raised on square tapering legs terminating in spade feet, 186cm wide x 57cm deep x 91cm high CONDITION REPORT: The back left hand part has a 1cm square piece of crossbanding away and at the front the veneers placed above the top of the drawer there is a 2cm section of veneer away. The top looks quite nice, there is some scratching and old scuffing also there is quite a large darkish patch to the centre which runs pretty much from the front to back from three quarters of the way. The frieze is a little faded compared to the polished top and would benefit from a polish. The frieze appears dry whilst the top which has had a polish at some stage. Scratching and scuffs to the spade feet commensurate with age.
Two decorative table runners made up of 17th Century French tapestry pieces bounded and fringed at the ends, the first (145cm) woven with various flower heads etc., the larger (215cm) woven with a central bowl overflowing with various fruits upon which a bird climbs and in turn flanked by two blue feathered parrots also looking to feed, bordered by decorative foliate and flower head designs etc.,
A 19th century (in earlier style) giltwood console table; white marble top over a frieze decorated in relief above turned legs with foliate and gadroon-style ornament and united by a similar central 'H' form stretcher with central inverted egg-and-dart style finial, 168cm wide x 61cm (deepest) x 86cm high
TOP NO LONGER TILTS DUE TO LATER NAILS APPLIED THROUGH BOTH BEARERS TO THE BLOCK A George III period square mahogany tilt-top occasional table of good colour; turned gun-barrel stem and on tripod base with pointed pad feet (minor reparations and some 'strengthening' etc.) 65cm square
